Saw some @greenparty.org.uk canvassers outside our building earlier. One of them complimented my Palestine hoodie and I replied that I cannot WAIT for them to kick out Lammy. Must be fun being a Green Party canvasser right now, pushing against an open door.

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

An ex-colleague of mine joined Palantir nearly 8 years ago and I knew at the time that was an abhorrent thing to do. Itโ€™s not new and thereโ€™s been no excuse for a long time.

If you deep fry porridge with that seasoning in batter itโ€™s called a โ€œporridge supperโ€

I feel like even if they tried to change tack, itโ€™s too late now surely. Theyโ€™ve shown us who they are and we believe them

I mean Donald Knuth (!) just wrote a paper about Claude solving a problem he had been working on for several weeks, but if you want to stick your head in the sand that is your prerogative. www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/%7Eknuth/pap...

Ok, got it. Executives have already paid for a subscription to a slot machine and they are forcing their employees to pull the lever on threat of being fired. The slot machine doesnโ€™t pay out but for some reason the executives donโ€™t care. The analogy makes total sense, donโ€™t know why I didnโ€™t see it

I have done weeks of work in hours, and Iโ€™ve also seen it crash and burn on tasks I thought would have been easier. It is very good at some things and very bad at others, and getting a sense of when to use it and when not to will make you much more effective as a programmer.

The financials donโ€™t make sense, itโ€™s a bubble that will sooner or later pop, the environmental impacts are terrible, and itโ€™s making people stupider. All reasonable criticisms of LLMs that you can make without having to pretend that they donโ€™t work very well for certain use cases.

Theyโ€™ll go bankrupt for other reasons: it takes more money to run the slot machines than they get from you in subscription costs. Normally you donโ€™t pay a subscription to a slot machine so again the analogy has stopped being useful.

06.03.2026 10:44 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think youโ€™ve stretched the analogy past breaking point here. Model providers donโ€™t have a financial incentive for you to get more bad results than you do good. Theyโ€™re incentivised to make the models work well.

Thereโ€™s plenty to criticise AI for, I think it just weakens your argument if you have to pretend (in the face of very obvious evidence these days) that itโ€™s completely useless

06.03.2026 08:04 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I mean even with this analogy, if a slot machine gives you the jackpot at a level where you consistently get out more than you put in, thatโ€™s good isnโ€™t it? Itโ€™s still a slot machine, it still risks gambling addiction, but if the payout is net positive itโ€™s an effective way to make money.

Proton Mail Helped FBI Unmask Anonymous โ€˜Stop Cop Cityโ€™ Protestor A court record reviewed by 404 Media shows privacy-focused email provider Proton Mail handed over payment data related to a Stop Cop City email account to the Swiss government, which handed it to the ...

New from 404 Media: Proton Mail, the privacy-focused email service, gave authorities data that let the FBI unmask an anonymous 'Stop Cop City' protester. It was payment data linked to the anonymous email account. From that, FBI ID'd them, then tracked their movements www.404media.co/proton-mail-...

BTW when I walking about โ€œusing it effectivelyโ€ Iโ€™m not talking about โ€œprompt engineeringโ€ but things like guardrails, sandboxing etc etc.

That doesnโ€™t mean there arenโ€™t lots of very valid critiques of it from other directions and itโ€™s absolutely true itโ€™s a variable reward system like a slot machine and addiction is a real risk.

I used to think this too but it had a tipping point in coding ability in December, the things it can now do in the specific domain of software are legitimately impressive, and software gives us the tools to build in some tolerance to failures/hallucinations.

What do you call it when you ask for feedback on your idea from ChatGPT in one window and Claude in another? Double glazing.

Itโ€™s Not Complicated The mainstream media failed the public during the genocide in Gaza. The Key's editor-in-chief shares her vision for what comes next.

Former LA Times managing editor @sarayasin.bsky.social launches The Key, a new publication about Palestine that will be "a home for journalists who have had their stories spiked in mainstream outlets."

I get where youโ€™re coming from. I am just honestly not sure at this point what โ€œwork that makes you employableโ€ is going to be in a year or twoโ€™s time! My job has already been transformed in ways I, originally very much a dismissive skeptic, never predicted could be possible.
