Saw some @greenparty.org.uk canvassers outside our building earlier. One of them complimented my Palestine hoodie and I replied that I cannot WAIT for them to kick out Lammy. Must be fun being a Green Party canvasser right now, pushing against an open door.

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

An ex-colleague of mine joined Palantir nearly 8 years ago and I knew at the time that was an abhorrent thing to do. Itโs not new and thereโs been no excuse for a long time.

Ok, got it. Executives have already paid for a subscription to a slot machine and they are forcing their employees to pull the lever on threat of being fired. The slot machine doesnโt pay out but for some reason the executives donโt care. The analogy makes total sense, donโt know why I didnโt see it

I have done weeks of work in hours, and Iโve also seen it crash and burn on tasks I thought would have been easier. It is very good at some things and very bad at others, and getting a sense of when to use it and when not to will make you much more effective as a programmer.

The financials donโt make sense, itโs a bubble that will sooner or later pop, the environmental impacts are terrible, and itโs making people stupider. All reasonable criticisms of LLMs that you can make without having to pretend that they donโt work very well for certain use cases.

Theyโll go bankrupt for other reasons: it takes more money to run the slot machines than they get from you in subscription costs. Normally you donโt pay a subscription to a slot machine so again the analogy has stopped being useful.

I think youโve stretched the analogy past breaking point here. Model providers donโt have a financial incentive for you to get more bad results than you do good. Theyโre incentivised to make the models work well.

Thereโs plenty to criticise AI for, I think it just weakens your argument if you have to pretend (in the face of very obvious evidence these days) that itโs completely useless

I mean even with this analogy, if a slot machine gives you the jackpot at a level where you consistently get out more than you put in, thatโs good isnโt it? Itโs still a slot machine, it still risks gambling addiction, but if the payout is net positive itโs an effective way to make money.

Proton Mail Helped FBI Unmask Anonymous โStop Cop Cityโ Protestor
A court record reviewed by 404 Media shows privacy-focused email provider Proton Mail handed over payment data related to a Stop Cop City email account to the Swiss government, which handed it to the ...
New from 404 Media: Proton Mail, the privacy-focused email service, gave authorities data that let the FBI unmask an anonymous 'Stop Cop City' protester. It was payment data linked to the anonymous email account. From that, FBI ID'd them, then tracked their movements www.404media.co/proton-mail-...

That doesnโt mean there arenโt lots of very valid critiques of it from other directions and itโs absolutely true itโs a variable reward system like a slot machine and addiction is a real risk.

I used to think this too but it had a tipping point in coding ability in December, the things it can now do in the specific domain of software are legitimately impressive, and software gives us the tools to build in some tolerance to failures/hallucinations.
