Joy-Cardio ver 0.1 is out and you can use it now on PC to play games by literally exercising!
With a pair of Joy-Cons you can turn your exercise bike or treadmill into a silly controller for games. Walk or bike IRL to move in-game! Full tutorial video is out but let's talk about it! ⬇️
My next attempt will be something I can put on an arduino or microcontroller so we can just give out to to people to make it as plug-and-play as possible. I've seen some libraries that can do it I just need to sit-down and build it! 🫡
I can't believe I haven't thought of this and now I have a reason to dust off American Truck Simulator again
This is a fun project I'll be working on throughout this year but I'm glad it's finally out. If there are any bugs let me know. I fully expect issues as all the years of me joking and saying "the game works in engine" only to have it explode when we got it to QA are going to catch up to me.
Before we call it 1.0 I want to get the following added:
- A Boxing mode (throw hands to attack in-game)
- Emulate an actual Xbox controller
- The UI to be cleaned up!
- Accessibility mode! (Accessibility in the field of fitness is something I started to learn about with this project which is cool)
I got a ton of request back in the day but it required a whole converter and some tools. Which still works today but those converters cost like $300. In today's economy it's not worth it!
So I ended up just making my own app! And unlike the old scripts you can use your normal controller with it!
This was based of a script I wrote years ago that let me to play games like BotW and Dark souls with the exercise controls of Ring Fit Adventure (I look so young before I became a game dev huh)

This is a python based app that pretty much takes your Joy-Con's inputs and is like "hey dude are you walking or biking? I'll press the W key then". And that's it for now (with more features planned for later)! You can download it/view the source code if you want

It's an app I built! It'll hopefully be out this weekend
also yipee it does work with a controller the only downside is the right now it just makes you run forward so combat is goofy. I have a prototype in the works that will just lock-up your joysticks when you're not moving. If you are moving it's just like playing the game normally but with more sweat.

Just had to deal with some personal stuff but yeah I've been wrapping up Joy-Cardio! I also found an under-the-desk Treadmill and confirmed that you could technically walk across FFXIV with the app if you really wanted to. I can't because I walk too wide.
