I truly don't understand why presses do this, and I swear that copyeditors insert errors to be able to later correct them because they're being paid piece rates. Exhibit A: the copyeditor of a chapter I wrote changed "General Secretary of the Communist Party" to "Party Leader Minister." Just... why?

I had this happen to me too. The copyeditor kept returning the piece with egregious errors inserted. Either it was AI or whoever was copyediting was being paid piece rates. The copyediting process dragged out over weeks, so I fail to see how this is more "efficient."

I should have added that: any donations today will be matched 1:1!

My department is crowdfunding today to support its Graduate Excellence Fund. We need another $15,000 CAD before the fund can start paying out scholarships. If you are McGill alumni, or just want to support history graduate students, please consider donating! crowdfunding.mcgill.ca/ui/main/p/GE...

On the Fulbrights and other government-funded grants, I hope they have the good sense to keep them (but I have my doubts). My PhD student won an American councils grant to go to Estonia for 6 months; it will be hard to pull off archival research for his diss without this trip. Sigh.

YUP. As a Canadian/international student in the US, I was never entitled to get a FLAS or a Title fellowship. (I later did, for Georgian, when I had a green card.) Even now, at McGill, I direct my US students toward these programs.

Exactly. The fellowships help to even out opportunities for language study between institutions: most places now only teach Russian, and even this is under attack. They certainly don't teach Uzbek. This is going to further entrench inequalities in training.

Also, it occurs to me that the federal funding helps to even out opportunities for language study between institutions: most places now only teach Russian, if at all, certainly not Armenian, Estonian, etc. This is going to further entrench inequalities in training.

It almost certainly means the program is going to suffer financially and courses will be cut. Sigh.

A huge loss for our field.

This is so incredibly sad. I know so many people who benefitted from these programs.

Can I just say how much I love this resource? I'm teaching my 1990s class (now "Post-Soviet History") class again next year, and this will be essential!

I would like to know what's up with the increasing number of emails I receive from publicity firms offering to help me (for a fee) publicize my book reviews or republish them in other journals. That isn't, umm, how book reviews work. Is this malfunctioning AI?

It's a new year, and I'm doing some housekeeping for @russianreview.bsky.social as its Hist/SocSci book review editor. If you would like to review for us, please let us know by filling out this google form: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F.... This will help me update our reviewer list! Thanks!

It's basically a combat, stealth, and puzzle game rolled into one with story elements from the Indiana Jones movies. The gameplay reminds me somewhat of Assassin's Creed, with lots of free exploration but less (though not no) emphasis on skill development. And the graphics are amazing!

I am obsessed with the new Indiana Jones game. It's super addictive!

It's so annoying! And such a waste of time to have to clean up something that I know I didn't submit with so many errors.

I sort of wonder if these copyeditors are being paid per correction because they make such odd changes, seemingly for the sake of making changes. They changed Brezhnev's title from "General Secretary of the Communist Party" to "Party leader minister," for example. It's just wrong... and weird!

Much of the copyediting at academic presses is being farmed out to copyeditors, often in India, with zero familiarity with academic language, to say nothing of specific fields. It's a problem. I had a copyeditor mangle a piece of mine recently; it took hours to correct the mistakes he introduced.

Help a book review editor out! Who is working on post-Soviet and contemporary Russian media (news, internet, digital media, etc.) who might be interested in reviewing books for @russianreview.bsky.social? Hoping to update my list because right now it is pretty small.

Perspective | The ruble has plummeted. It’s not the first time. Ordinary people in Russia are shouldering the economic consequences of Putin’s war.

The ruble is collapsing again and I don't have the energy to write another op-ed about the long history of ruble collapses, so here is the last one. And this probably won't be the last time, either. www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2022...
