What a result!! Huge congratulations to the amazing Hannah Spencer - everyone in Gorton and Denton has just made history. This result shows @greenparty.org.uk can win anywhere, that the politics of hope can win over the politics of hate & there is no longer any such thing as a Labour safe seat ๐Ÿ’š

Sir John More, well into his 70s, lost in the thoughts of old age. Father of Sir Thomas More, and wonderfully drawn here by Hans Holbein. Love this drawing!

The picture shows a vessel in the shape of a two handled basket of brown colour.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: One of my favourite #Roman objects made of glass is this little basket (height 6.5cm). It is not clear what it was used for, possibly to hold cosmetics.

From Syria, dating 3rd century AD.

My photo shows an ornate gold wreath displayed against a black background. The wreath is adorned with gold branches densely covered with delicate, jagged-edged oak leaves rendered in thin, hammered gold, and acorns at the end of thin curved, tendril-like wires. The leaves are packed together, some bent, others folded, and slightly twisted, as if caught in a breeze, suggesting movement and rustling of the leaves. At the front of the wreath, in the centre, is a small standing, winged figure of Nike, the goddess of victory. The museum spot lights enhance the warm gleam of the gold.

My photo shows a cylindrical drinking cup made of reddish-brown terracotta. It has a wide mouth, a long slender body with rounded base and two large curved handles extending from the rim to near the base. This type of vessel is known as a โ€˜depasโ€™ goblet (depas amphikypellon) out of reference to their mention in Homerโ€™s Iliad. More than one hundred of these vessels have been excavated at Troy, dating from 2500 to 2000 BC. Recent organic residue analysis from fragments excavated at Troy show they were used for consuming wine.

Clay goblet from Early Bronze Age Troy.

Known as a depas goblet after the Homeric โ€˜depas amphikypellon', recent residue analysis shows these two-handled vessels were used for drinking wine some 4,250 years ago!

She was always THE woman. Looking right at you from 1590: Infanta Catalina Micaela (almost surely), painted by Sofonisba Anguissola (probably). Surely one of the greatest renaissance portraits.

My photo shows a limestone fragment measuring 17 cm x 11.5 cm x 4 cm with a painting of a female dancer shown in profile performing an acrobatic back bend. The girl has long wavy/crimped black hair which falls down to the ground. She is wearing large gold circular earrings and a black kilt with decorative red and white pattern which is tied at the front around her hips.

This limestone fragment comes from the Workers Village of Deir el-Medina which housed the artisans who worked on the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Flakes of limestone were readily available as by-products of tomb construction. They were used by artisans as sketch and note pads for practice drawings, sketching, writing poetry etc.etc. These stone flakes are known by Egyptologists as ostraca, (singular: ostracon). Thousands of ostraca have been found at Deir-el Medina.

Artistโ€™s painting of an acrobatic dancer on a flake of limestone, c. 1292 - 1077 BC.

Around 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, artists used stone fragments for painting and drawing instead of paper sketchpads!

Three standing stones carved in relief on a stone panel

It's #StandingStoneSunday ๐Ÿฅณ The triple stone alignment of Harold's Stones, Trellech, is depicted as a relief carving on Lady Probert's sundial of 1689, now in the local church

This shows the stones have barely changed in 3 centuries ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
