That Iโve been teaching for over 20 years, and in that experience teaching thousands of kids, more students with math anxiety have typical or high math ability. But letโs never question research or enter into healthy debates about it.
In my experience, that 77% is far greater. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

Manipulatives as tools to support/model/extend thinking across K-12. Also, kids โcan use them as toysโ and then as teachers, we can scaffold in learning based on what kids are doing.

2/2 Plus, forcing kids to adapt to a curriculum instead developing a repertoire and drawing upon what we need when we need it is just good teaching.
1/2 Iโm not really referring to either. When districts mandate teachers use a particular curriculum and only that particular curriculum by default of the curriculum being static, itโs going to benefit some kids, but definitely wonโt benefit all.
Language and oral storytelling is cultural and directly tied to how students might demonstrate understanding of concepts. How often do we see kids penalized and harmed for not demonstrating understanding according how the science or the curriculum says they should.

3/3 Donโt get me wrong, direct instruction is a component of effective pedagogy. But we need to be very intentional with how/when/where/with who By not incorporating a variety of instruction and assessment techniques, weโll support some, but what about everyone else? #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky
2/3 Instruction driven by the โScience of _____โ does not consider cultural and community ways of knowing and doing mathematics, and as a result, is particularly harmful for students who historically and currently experience the greatest marginalization in math spaces. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky
1/3 Seems very similar to the push here to a โBack to Basicsโ approach. Teaching math is not the same as teaching reading. Kids begin mathematizing their world as infants. While many kids are ready to before starting school, theyโre not reading. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

Saw a former student today who I taught when she was in 8th grade. Sheโs now 27 and an English teacher at the high school I went to as a student. Not sure if itโs a full circle thing, but either way, itโs definitely a trip. #mathsky #iteachmath #edusky

If we launch with a visual with two open prompts, we are inviting all students into the conversation. If we can then move into a storytelling framework where we invite students in as partners in problem-posing, we support developing agency and efficacy amongst students.

Hereโs a novel idea, maybe try talking to kids in order to figure out what they know, can do. While weโre at it, maybe point out a few things they need to pay attention to, see what they can do and then provide feedback based on what theyโre doing/not doing in relation to what the goal is ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Which is why a space such as this is so important; educators sharing the work they do for no other reasons other than supporting one another and growing a field. Period.
