Again, I guess I'm naive, but I can't believe these guys don't have someone around them smart enough to say "Take the incredibly easy way out and just say your NHL team needs you".

It's not even a politcal or a moral thing, it's just basic PR.

In 1949, Newfoundland and Labrador joined Canada as the 10th province. As soon as it joined, CBC began broadcasting from the island.
Two years later, the network launched The Fisheries Broadcast. It started as a 15-minute program but was expanded to 30 minutes.

On this day in 1923, Howie Meeker was born in Kitchener.
As an NHL player, he won the Calder and four Stanley Cups. He later ran several hockey schools and was a commentator for Hockey Night in Canada. He served in Parliament from 1953 to 1955. He is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
