Tennessee has been terrible about public education. This is probably a first step for ending public education as an institution. Ending public education as a RIGHT. Its Congress would love to make all education private and shut out poor people.

I've told this story before, but I'm happy to keep telling it. My adolescent-onset gender dysphoria was interpreted as an ever-shifting psychiatric diagnosis. I was heavily medicated and repeatedly hospitalized.

Conservatives view everything through the lens of authority. In their mind, a therapist is supposed to be authority figure who tells you how you’re wrong about yourself and how you’re living your life so that you can change it according to their commands.

You are the most vindicated person in the history of social media

We are frightened for these children. We don’t want them to die. We don’t want them to have to live through the pain we lived through. We don’t want them to have to endure WORSE than what we went through. Please, @mayor.nyc.gov . Do something.

We who are pleading for your help are trans adults who were trans kids. We survived despite ignorance, suppression, and lack of care when we grew up. That was hard enough. We cannot imagine the agony of knowing a path out of gender dysphoria actually exists and then still being forbidden to take it.

Yeah, it’s especially concerning to hear you say it. I left my home (red) state years ago, but here in the same country is deeply concerning. My birth certificate can’t be updated, so there’s always missmatched documentation for me.

I'm known as a trans journalist who doesn't scaremonger or panic people unnecessarily. I think this story, combined with everything else we know about the Kansas law and the intentions behind it, is deeply, deeply concerning. If I lived in Kansas I would be trying to figure out an exit plan.

If accurate, this proves two things:

1. The intent of this law was purely harm and had nothing to do with logistics (we knew this already)

2. They have lists of trans people which have been accumulated from data beyond normal government records (we suspected this)

Both very, very dark portents.

@agrobbonta.oag.ca.gov I want this here in CA. We have similar anti-discrimination protections, which should be enforced. A threat of funding cutoffs does not negate care providers’ obligations under the law.
