On Philipp Peyman Engelβs serious credibility problem
Eva Menasse ΓΌber Philipp Peyman Engel, das deutsche Feuilleton und wer entscheidet, was in Deutschland jΓΌdisch ist. thediasporist.de/de/die-verfo...
Another day, another chat mit einem jΓΌdischen Kollegen in Deutschland, der von nicht-jΓΌdischen Deutschen boykottiert wird, weil er nicht mit den Ansichten der deutschen Mainstream-Medien darΓΌber ΓΌbereinstimmt, was Juden glauben *sollten*
Philipp Engel: Nur Rassisten nennen meine Mutter Iranerin!
Seine Mutter dazu: Die Verbundenheit mit dem Iran ist immer noch da

Back to Bonn this summer and not sad
Das "Sozialisierung in Deutschland" Argument ist nach wie vor der Frume-Sore Charakter in allen innerjΓΌdischen Debatten in Deutschland. Hat keine Substanz, spukt aber dennoch herum....
The librarians at A&M presented me with a Jewish Studies βhousewarmingβ gift - the first Yiddish sci-fi fantasy novel ever ππ
Monday: Jewish Studies program announced and launched
Thursday: already two offers from our libraries for collaborations to create a Jewish Studies research and archival collection
I am in heaven.
Finally, a birth announcement at my university: the new Jewish Studies program at Texas A&M speaks!
Academic English that will send you to an early grave:
"But the situation is not exhausted by the contradictory constatations of ineluctable relation and its equally unavoidable absence." In an article meant to *clarify* Kafka's story on the Chinese Wall. Happy Halloween! π»
Big career victory to have a post land on a Jewish meme sharing group
Itβs probably time for a golem

And Hamas is disgusting
10/7 was like 9/11 I suppose because of the sense of an existential attack but ca. 90% Israelis blaming the government for the event is the total opposite of my countryβs path
No justice without humility.
Determined not to lose friends over hard and bitter politics.
Turns out I canβt process through the horror stories from friends on Oct 7 fast enough to gird myself for the despair of war. Many out there donβt even have the luxury of my sloppy βtime to processβ: they are thrown in the middle. So I am not going to be posting much- just hoping
I know Mila and I am aware she has been speaking to and strategizing with our department head who reformed our languages departments into a Global Studies program that preserved our major with no jobs lost. I am really hoping Miami can do the same.
"My daughter and son in law were killed today but in their dying saved [their child's] life. They were all together in the secure room. And they covered his body and he was saved. Nevertheless a bullet penetrated them and went into his abdomen." Prof. Ilan Troen, a friend

Thanks - itβs just that this person is such a thoughtful scholar and teacher about Israel Palestine and also personally generous - no one deserves this, but when itβs someone like that - the mind really reels
After hours of adrenaline and dread following the news, I learned someone who was very generous to me and instrumental in helping establish a Jewish Studies program at my university has suffered terrible losses today in Israel.
May all who have been affected know no more sorrow.
They are very charming
Happy weekend from the pink house geckos on my porch
It's kinda nice that in Vienna I often hear the question, "do you celebrate the chagim?" instead of "are you Jewish?"
and it's so much more pleasant than at Ben Gurion airport, too.
Watched a TV series from the 90s and I was so distracted by the unparalyzed forehead muscles and moving eyebrows that I couldnβt concentrate on the dialogue π
Not an insider but word is that Miami at least is empowering faculty to reorganize themselves in a way that they can succeed. Let's hope the good faith from the admin remains good faith. But I agree with you, it's an ideological change in the guise of financial contingency.
Students: so can I wish my online German friends βhappy German unity dayβ today?
