I'd need to think about the video you posted more before I could say what points I agree or disagree with, but fundamentally it's smart to highlight the question of how comics are advertised and to who. That's is likely to be a bigger issue in this discussion than people I hear from treat it.
What we probably need is either a couple of big stories starring Black characters that are so good & important that they find success among white and Black readers or sufficient success at building a Black comic ecosystem that the Big 2 would be leaving money on the table not to copy it.
Introducing new characters is a particularly broken part of the modern industry and Black characters have this compounded by racism at the fan, retailer, or editorial levels, even if there is genuine will to do better at one or more.
The trouble seems to me that the Big 2 have anxiety launching series without a tested legacy, so the options within their comfort tend to be spinning off a Black sidekick or team member or giving one a legacy name and support them just enough to survive when they revert to nostalgia.
This is how I've always seen it too, though honestly the overall acceptance of John probably has at least as much to do with the DCAU being long enough ago and early enough in the mainstreaming of comics that lots of serious comic fans knew John before Hal.
That's a good point. I worry that Marvel doesn't always recognize that and are in a rush to age Miles into that same 18-28 range all their characters are herded into, but the high school setting definitely keeps him from being treated like too much of an adult.

In the wake of Jacopo Camagni's passing I'm thinking a lot about community, and how we as creators need to make the extra effort to connect with one another. There's a lot of depression and insecurity in this industry. Often the only time we see one another we're boxed behind convention tables.
