It actually reminds me a bit of the classic citations needed trope of how pundits will often claim that their recommendation is for the greater good / ultimately to help you "be more electable" but the thing it is really about is of course adopting their own personal politics

Yes definitely, with a lot of these smug diatribes I absolutely get the sense they're unwilling to really try, learn, fit in with the community, etc - they expect it to bend to accommodate them instead and I think this is what they're trying to do with the "bluesky is dying" narrative

People are unwilling to admit they fell for an obvious culture war grift and they want to excuse their own reactionary tendencies with this argument that actually the wokes were really bad and we simply can't blame people for ushering in giga hellworld because they had to put pronouns in an email

I think we are going to see more and more people pushing this sort of "well you have to admit that wokeness was out of control!" narrative in the coming years, it feels very much like the "they had us all fooled with the weapons of mass destruction" narrative of our time

We've talked a lot about platner "doing a fetterman" but of course this type of pundit guy would actually love that so they have an obvious vested interest in downplaying the tattoo thing and making it sound like wacky bluesky screaming over nothing

Yeah this is certainly very interesting, and I wonder how much of this is them just boosting anything bluesky doesn't like versus suspecting the guy is not actually progressive and supporting him because of this

Yeah I do think this is a critical part of the delusional self-confidence that a lot of these PBTH™ types develop, they believe they are organically popular and that a community like this is an aberration rather than the other way around

Not to overanalyze here but a lot of these professional bad take haver types are used to curated environments where they are coddled, their perspectives are boosted, negative comments get deleted, etc and they just cannot handle jumping into the deep end of the pool

Bluesky now feels like the most "in the know", extremely online kind of place, similar to how something awful was in like the mid 00s. I think a lot of these normies are just really out of their element here and they're trying to convince themselves everything else is the problem

I've talked about this in previous rants but there really is a whole culture of slang, bits, riffs, etc that are a big part of this online community experience

I really think that the fundamental thing with a lot of these pundit normie types and their push that bluesky "is dying" stems from them just not being very online and not really understanding the culture that entails
