I had similar reactions from the marine ecology community when I first started the drone program at CSUMB. The fear of jobs being replaced by automation seems to be a common one.

One of the cool ways that the Ocean Sciences Meeting solved a space limitation issue has been through the use of “silent” talk sessions where talks are broadcast through wireless headphones. This let the organizers set up 7 talk stages in one of the exhibit halls.

Some good news this week. A federal court ruled that the Dept of Ed directive against DEI programs can no longer be used to deny or revoke funding from academic institutions. Someone had an “oopsies” with their sailboat right in front of one our study sites on Catalina Island. Apparently the boat has been stuck there for a couple of months.
