I had similar reactions from the marine ecology community when I first started the drone program at CSUMB. The fear of jobs being replaced by automation seems to be a common one.
Title slide for a talk about using drones to study pinniped populations. The slides has a photo of sea lions along with logos for different research groups.
Looking forward to talking about drones, AI & pinniped ecology today @ 2:30 @ the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting. @uwsafs.bsky.social @uwmarinebiology.bsky.social @uwenvironment.bsky.social #drone #drones #dronesforgood #OSM26

One of the cool ways that the Ocean Sciences Meeting solved a space limitation issue has been through the use of βsilentβ talk sessions where talks are broadcast through wireless headphones. This let the organizers set up 7 talk stages in one of the exhibit halls.
With #bem2026 our amazing new student committee has created an instagram - www.instagram.com/p/DU9ef50jCC... - and is now on here at @benthicsmeeting.bsky.social - marine ecology folk, go give them a follow and forward this post! ππ§ͺπ

When the Department of Education issued vague threats to defund schools that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, we sued and now they're backing down.
This is a win for students' right to a full and honest education.
Some good news this week. A federal court ruled that the Dept of Ed directive against DEI programs can no longer be used to deny or revoke funding from academic institutions. Since the Dept of Ed dropped its appeal to the initial ruling, they canβt revive this initiative. www.nea.org/about-nea/me...
How are faculty all across the country fighting back against attempts to dismantle diversity & equity programs at universities and to stifle academic freedom?

Did we just buy a new drone for our coastal research group? Yes. Did we just name that new drone Rogue One to signify how itβs going to change how we study coastal systems? Perhaps.

The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are a test for every MSM member with a platform. If you are not voicing your outrage at this blatant violation of the First Amendment, you are utterly discredited as a journalist.
Proud of my hometown for showing up today but also disheartened by the ongoing assault itβs been experiencing from ICE since June. Weβre L.A. and weβll push through this.
40th anniversary of the Challenger tragedy. I recall seeing this in 7th grade. This was a diverse shuttle crew with Christa McAullife, Ronald McNair & Ellison Onizuka. Thereβs a scholarship named after McNair & tributes to Onizuka in Little Tokyo, L.A. as the first Japanese American in space.
Science correspondent Miles OβBrien says the Challenger disaster 40 years ago was a "collective tragedy."
Summer courses at Friday Harbor Labs have launched many scientific careers. Including mine. I was more reluctant to leave at the end of the course than other students.
I promise you will have fun and learn more than you can imagine.

Greg Bovino right now. Gratifying seeing this man get his comeuppance given how he and his goons have been terrorizing my hometown since June.

While analyzing drone images from one of our offshore surveys in Monterey, our team came across a couple of humpback whales swimming through our study area. Always fun having these unexpected finds in our images.
