I was there today too. Absolutely gobsmacked how much time it spent hovering high up like a Kestrel. What a Bird!

Well worth ten minutes of your time. Some of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper footage is simply phenomenal, with some rarely documented behaviour.
Talk about up close and personal.

Check this out. Absolutely stunning find.
Tolkien knew his history and Peter Jackson managed to recreate the feel.
Haunting sound.

Perhaps the latter though the habitat itself should ring alarm bells.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza caused a mass die-off in Eurasian cranes during their autumn migration through Germany, France and Spain. More than 18,000 dead cranes were reported dead in Germany alone. The full demographic impact of this mortality on the crane population needs to be assessed.

Our paper in December's @britishbirds.bsky.social describes success in using sound recording for detecting Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. We found Lesser Spots still present in woodlands where they have not been seen/heard for years. This is very exciting www.woodpecker-network.org.uk/index.php/ne...
Here in Leicester too. Why? 🤬
“The highest levels were found in Irish breakfast cereal, followed by Belgian wholemeal bread, then German wholemeal bread, then French baguette. It was found across a huge range of products, from spaghetti, to cheese scones and ginger bread.” 🥖
Congratulations to my colleague at Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust Dr @hannahjsellers.bsky.social on the publication of the second paper from her PhD!

The wonderful sound of a couple of hundred Twite - known here in Shetland as 'Linties' - at Loch of Spiggie in one of the 40 'Bumblebird' wildlife-friendly crops grown by crofters and the Shetland Species on the Edge team in 2025. 👏

This Swallow at Balranald, N Uist this afternoon appears to be the American subspecies: erythrogaster due to the lack of a dark band across the lower throat.
Keep me going over winter! 🤞
I’ve always felt it had possibility, wet scrubby habitat similar to that favoured out east but to find two in four years on a 150metre stretch of river is just bonkers. I think they’re overlooked, though I’ve obs had a dump. 2 YBW, 2 Sibe Chiff and Firecrest.
Absolutely! Been watching two today on my Leicester patch. They go absolutely mental at Sibe playback, wing flicking and bombing like mini skuas. Love em!
Unbelievable. Two Sibe Chiffs and the Dusky on the patch, we could really do with a county Hume’s!
More obliging 😳… Ace!
