Black and Bloom was a research project, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council, that aims to unravel how dark particles (black) and microbial processes (bloom) darken and accelerate the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

Collectively, our findings highlight the biogeochemical links between aerosols and the ice sheet surface, which have impacts on glacier ice algal growth and the corresponding surface ice albedo and melting.
In other words, this algae DARKENS the icesheet which in turn speeds up the meltrate.
They returned the following summer and this paper, led by Dr Jenine McCutcheon, explores the role of atmospheric transport of aerosols containing critical nutrients (phosphorus) which "feeds" the ice and snow algae colonies on the surface of the icesheet. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
In 2016, an intrepid group of scientists stepped onto the #Greenland Icesheet and setup a camp to collect the most comprehensive dataset ever made. They made simultaneous measurements of microbiology, glaciology, geochemistry, atmospheric parameters and remote sensing for 6 weeks.
you were at the meeting, we have now got a gibbon identifying system, next is the orangutans!

Finally, despite what some people think "burning stuff" is NOT the cheapest way to heat your home. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
If you were to tell people from rural India or somewhere similar that we do that voluntarily with no real need, theyβd look at you very strangely and think you were a little bit barmy.
(adapted from a conversation with Prof Steve Arnold)
Data shows that most sources of PM2.5 have reduced, BUT domestic combustion dropped dramatically between 1990 and 2005 but then looks to have stalled
It included a focus on solid fuel burning....
"The burning of solid fuels is a large contributor to national emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and is a major source of air pollution, especially in urban areas."
Last week, Defra released their Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) 2025 www.gov.uk/government/p...
It is widely known that the particulate pollution (smoke) produced by using solid fuel is a massive source of urban #airpollution in the wintertime. Irrespective of what fuel you use..... some ARE better than others BUT still hundreds of times more pollution that gas
In the UK, we have decades of technology, engineering, infrastructure development, that allow the vast majority of households to have access to gas & electricity.
Despite this, a growing number of people insist on burning solid fuel to heat a portion of their homes. #secondaryheating
A BBC news story yesterday about the discovery of the earliest creation/use of fire set me thinking.
"It provided warmth at will and enabled our ancestors to cook and eat meat".

Join me for the Air Sensors International Conference, we'll dive into pressing issues around #airquality, #climatechange, and environmental sustainability.
This is a fantastic opportunity to explore innovative sensor technologies and connect with fellow scientists, policymakers & industry leaders.
The wheels are all turning now for #ASIC2026!
A fantastic selection of talks and posters, we had almost 250 abstracts, a big (but very rewarding) job to go through them all. Β

Amazing science, so much detail from Earth Observations, Eloise Marais reminds us that the cloudiness of the UK, makes it one of the biggest challenges for extracting atmospheric chemical information.
