Oh yeah that DragonQuest scenario for Wizardry is indeed based on the very tabletop game that got Dragon Quest renamed to Dragon Warrior for the US market

I'm also finding custom scenarios for the Apple][ version of Ultima III but that's a story for another time
Funnily people actually put copyright notices on their custom scenario floppies.
Modding. Modding never changes
The way the Apple][ version works is that you have to first put the boot disk, then the master scenario disk, and finally a duplicate of that scenario you copied on a formatted disk (the one whose data will be overwritten for every action you take).
Most of those mods seem to hijack the second step
There is in fact quite a few alternate scenarios for the Apple][ version of Wizardry: www.zimlab.com/wizardry/mod...
It lives again
Internet Archive is all broken aaaaaah
About Wizardry Xth's offsprings. It's very interesting
The fact that I like exploration heavy games serves me well when I dungeon delve the internet
Sometimes I get very unlucky when tracking down old fixes
For SAO we got an actual Wizardry MMO with permadeath (it's more permissive than it sounds) but it was short-lived and I don't think it has game design cousins. I'm not sure there are many MMORPGs that are centered around floors
It's probably getting harder to tell how weird it was because for example in Avalon's case FPS and RPG have started to merge since 2001. In fact I thought STALKER was a somewhat decent proxy for it in the late 00's
You can see it in Avalon with the characters' classes. As for SAO, Kawahara did a fictional interview as Kayaba (SAO's creator) who explains Wizardry was his favorite game and the one he took a lot of inspiration from
Actually I have to mention this because it's fun: from what I remember Wizardry influenced SAO's first arc, which is why it it doesn't look like most MMOs. But also the Gun Gal Online arc was influenced by Avalon, which Oshii said was based on Wizardry, explaining why it isn't like FPS of the time
They also added Tapjoy to the mobile version, which has a very awful reputation
>700~1000 hours players are uninstalling the game right now because of a more invasive anticheat that also makes it incompatible with Steam Deck
Ah well, lol
Anyway I just think it's neat to see how Wizardry spread its tentacles throughout Japanese gaming history. I could also ramble about how it was also a direct "vibe" influence to 2 generations of Fromsoft games, Mamoru Oshii's Avalon and even Sword Art Online but that's enough nerd talk for today 🫡
There are other spiritual successors with no common staff like Dark Spire and Labyrinth of Zangetsu. Also freege are another big can of worm. Most notable is probably Javardry which got a few user made scenarios and also has fantastic art that western indie devs use sometimes for their own crawlers
Special mention to BUSIN but more like the other way around in that Wiz influenced Megami Tensei and Kouji Okada was involved (to my surprise because I thought Atlus was merely a publisher here)
For the maybe existing curious person about spiritual successors:
Empire -> Elminage
Xth:
- Generation Xth (later remade into Operation Babel/Abyss, also Team Muramasa's catalog in general
- Class of Heroes, somehow
... I went overboard again and grabbed most Wizardry games that were released in Japan. And most spiritual successors of the many spin-off branches too. And graph paper and a pencil because Gridmonger doesn't seem ideal on Linux
The Llylgamyn Saga PS1 manual is so sexy. Jun Suemi is an absolute beast

Access the visual novels, soundtracks and in-game screenshots of Counter-Strike NEO. -WHITE MEMORIES- comprises a series of backstories which unfold the history of the conflicts between both CSF and NEO factions, narrated by a few main characters. To date, there are only 12 episodes of the visual novels ever released.
Not sure why but this is all way too funny to me
Huh, today I learned
Mario Kart Wii [picture of Daisy's statue in Mario Kart Wii] Model is very simplistic, detail is achieved with textures. While low-resolution, all details are present Mario Kart Tour/8 Deluxe [picture of Daisy's statue in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe] Textures have been removed in favor of modeling details, causing many of them to be lost Source: noclip.website
In Mario Kart Wii, the statues on Daisy Circuit are simple, but achieve detail through textures. A stylistic change in Mario Kart Tour/8 Deluxe eschews the textures and attempts to model the details instead, resulting in a much rougher look despite having more polygons.
