not sure what our next book club pick will be, but I am excited to continue reading books that remind all of us why we do the work we do and continue the good fight💪 to conserve our natural resources, especially at a time when it seems everyone & everything is working against those goals. 🧪🪶🐯
I launched a book club earlier this year for student members of @thewildlifesociety.bsky.social as a way to build community in a time of uncertainty for wildlife and the environment. It just so happened that the first 2 books we chose were Coyote America & American Serengeti, both by Dan Flores!
and I guess while I am fangirling about wildlife authors I would be remiss to not include how I had the incredible honor to host Dan Flores last week in a discussion of his book, American Serengeti! What a treat to meet him and hear his stories!

oh boy, haha! I am definitely expecting it and looking forward to reading the stories - working in a land of tigers and bears and other big wildlife probably has no shortage of stressful situations!
so excited to continue reading and learning about this intrepid project and the people behind such challenging research!
the scene when they captured their first tiger. I kept thinking about how there was so much at stake, so many unknowns, and what if the ketamine wore off too soon and they would have a semi-alert tiger on their hands...I was totally right there in the moment. The book is fantastic so far.
I don't know if it's because I've done fieldwork with big wildlife that I can imagine the scene so vividly or that it's a testament to @jonathanslaght.com's writing (definitely mostly that), but I went through full fight or flight response with fast heartbeat and the stress sweats when reading 👇
