Here’s a cover I illustrated for the upcoming D&D book, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. It was such a joy to paint Strahd again 🦇

The physical copies are just for personal use atm. I'm tabling at a convention next month and wanted to be able to show them off, but I cannot sell them without going through DMsGuild (for legal reasons).
I would love to send you one for free though, let me double check that it's OK.

It was Baldur's Gate: Bones & Blood, and another adventure I wrote last year. So, it has your incredible Savra Sunstar art. 🔥

Until now, everything I have published over the years has been in digital form. But today, I held a book I wrote in my hands for the first time.
What a great feeling.

You want to know what's harder than writing a 10,000-word adventure? Writing a 1,000-word adventure. #DnD

At my table, everyone is welcome. It does not matter where you're from, what you look like, or how you identify. You belong.

Just want to say I love the show! If you haven't watched it, you should definitely check it out - it's hilarious, the DMs are fantastic, and the episodes are short.
But IYKYK, then go pick up the book and support the creators!

Two colour illustration of Barad Dûr, with Sauron's eye at the top. surrounded with the ring inscription in elvish. the sky is red with sparks and ash floating in the air, the tower is above a fiery chasm. The front doors are glowing red with silhouettes of chains and armouries. A cloud of ash conceals the horizon. This will be a banner and riso print first. Digital prints coming later this year.

Although both scenes are rather lengthy exposition compared to the average, they are deeply evocative, and my players loved them. When you read them out loud at the table, they should give your players goosebumps.
That is the power of a well-placed dramatic narration.

In "Its Alive!" I do this at the moment the players reach Viktra Mordenheim. I want this vivid image of the storm, the monster, and the mad scientist herself.
In "Bones & Blood," I do it when Strahd's image appears in the sky, threatening Baldur's Gate, and calling the party to action.

The first, I believe, is the first scene of a campaign, adventure, or session. This is an opportunity to draw players into the world and introduce whatever elements you want them to be drawn towards.
The second is at an especially climactic scene or moment, such as the beginning of a BBEG fight.

There is a popular idea in D&D module design that flavor text should be kept very short. In general, I agree, the average dungeon room or scene shouldn't require more than 1-3 sentences.
Like most design principles, there are exceptions, and I think the nuance is particularly interesting.

Best advice I can give to younger gamers/designers/techs: Find ways to stay active and think about ergonomics when you're sitting. It may not be glamorous, but you gotta take care of yourself. Sitting all day takes its toll.

GM Tip: Keep a few random tables handy for names, rumors, weather, or encounters. They're lifesavers when improvising and often spark ideas you wouldn't have thought of yourself.

One of the very few privileges that writers have is our job lets us be the weird little freaks we are in peace. Why do I have to record myself talking about my writing? You can just read my damn writing lmao don't look at me let me crawl back under my damp log, let me live damn

Talking D&D with a friend who tells me I'm "a grognard, but with modern sensibilities."
Seems like an oxymoron, but I'll allow it.

TSR 20th Anniversary booklet, with the 7 logos of the company to that date on an orange-yellow gradient background.
While digging through boxes, I found this collector piece from 1994. (@alexkammer.bsky.social surely knows more about it.) I think it was printed for staff only, but perhaps it was a Gen Con item.
The back cover lists all the companies licensed products by year, so it feels very inside-baseball.

Pictures really can't do it justice. The roast was so tender and the sauce was incredibly delicious. Luxurious even, but super affordable if you put in the effort.
