Complicit cowards. Unwilling to critique American actions of aggression. Sickening stuff. No such hesitancy, and rightly so, when it comes to russian acts of imperialist aggression.

Shabana Mahmood to introduce legislation on migration to take on Reform The Home Secretary this week visited Denmark which has one of the toughest asylum and immigration systems in Europe.

She is not ‘taking on Reform’ she is sinking to their level. There’s a difference.

This is eccentric by the standards of the median British voter, and British Muslims have far more socially conservative views than the median voter, by a huge distance. This is especially true regarding homosexuality and the role of women. The most ruddy-faced bar room reactionary at the 19th hole is a blue-haired college radical in comparison. (Incidentally, I’m also not sure how the Green party squares their environmental transport policy with the fact that British-Pakistanis tend to favour cars, as social conservatives with families.)

Thank God Muslim voters in Manchester overwhelmingly decided to vote for the female candidate in the party led by a proud gay Jew, then. Guess your analysis is wrong!

University of Galway plans to end and replace arts course amid fall-off in interest ‘Urgent’ reform aims to meet changing needs of students as they seek ‘direct routes to employment’

Genuinely shocked to read about proposals at Galway (an amazing university with world-class humanities departments) to axe the broad-based arts degree. Really grim reading. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/educ...

The first golden age of paranoia came in the 1970s. It was a decade in which everyone in Britain from the prime minister down believed malign forces were at work. Harold Wilson, the former prime minister, was by turns a kgb plant or a soon-to-be victim of a secret-service coup, depending on who was asked. Reactionary colonels plotted while revolutionary sects marched through trade unions. Enemies were within and without, above and below.
A second golden age of paranoia is happening right now. Almost half of British voters believe that the statement "a secret group of people is responsible for making all major world decisions, such as going to war" is definitely or probably true, points out More In Common, a pollster. From left to right, rich to poor, almost every Briton will at some point reach for a complicated, conspiratorial explanation when a simpler and more likely one is at hand. The "paranoid style"
', as it was dubbed by Richard Hofstadter, an
American historian, is back in fashion.

Another way of looking at this is that when times are tough, money is tight and elites are hard pressed due to e.g. abysmal corruption scandals, they tend to drop the polite facade and move towards overt enforcement archive.ph/SNpXO

AI is going to trash every single way that we had modernised university teaching and send us back to handwritten exams and vivas for every assessment. Which will bring back every problem with those assessment models (and make us seem even more out-of-touch even as we just try to do meaningful work).

You may laugh, but the Macbeths are a much better role model for a marriage than Romeo and Juliet. They discuss their problems (killing the king of Scotland), share their hobbies (killing the king of Scotland), and resolve their conflicts (by killing the king of Scotland).

800 staff leave Edinburgh University amid £140m cuts drive Bosses at the institution want to cut £90m from their annual salary bill, which unions say could result in as many as 1,400 jobs being lost.

Nearly 800 staff left the University of Edinburgh last year as senior management pushes a £140m savings drive

This hits precarious staff hardest

It's a great comfort to learn that senior management pay & bonuses are unaffected 😉
