A Day for Gaza
Today, The Nation is turning over its website exclusively to stories from Gaza and its people. This is why.
Media coverage of Gaza has plummeted. So today on @thenation.com, we're doing something pretty special: we're only running pieces by people in and from Gaza.
We're calling it "A Day for Gaza." You can find links to all of the incredible pieces here. Please read! www.thenation.com/article/worl...

One thing that irks me: people keep calling the folks on the streets in Minneapolis protestors. They are not generally there to protest, they are there to observe and document. This is the product of organizing and mutual aid. It is telling that these acts of citizenship are seen as protest!

If the admin's strategic goal was to break public resistance to immigration enforcement activities, it was a tactical mistake to go to the Twin Cities.

Red Cup Day is Starbucksโ biggest sales day of the year. Customers across the country line up before dawn for free reusable holiday cups, marking the kickoff of the coffee giantโs most profitable season.
This year the event falls on November 13, and Starbucks Workers United, the SEIU-affiliated union, says employees across hundreds of stores in at least 25 cities will strike unless the company โfinalizes a labor contractโ beforehand (CBS).
More than 550 Starbucks stores have unionized since 2021, but negotiations that began in 2024 remain stalled. The union, representing over 9,500 baristas out of roughly 200,000 Starbucks workers in North America, has filed more than 1,000 unfair-labor-practice charges with the NLRB, citing firings, store closures, and bargaining delays. Starbucks denies wrongdoing, claiming it is negotiating โin good faith.โ
According to Indeed, the average U.S. hourly pay for a Starbucks barista is about $15.75, while Reuters reports the company claims average pay โwith benefitsโ comes to about $30 per hour.

BREAKING: After months of stonewalling by Starbucks, unionized baristas just voted 92% to authorize a ULP strike unless $SBUX finalizes fair contracts & stops union busting.
If forced, our baristas will strike in dozens of cities on Nov 13โ the company's busiest day of the year.

Israel calls us โhuman animals,โ never understanding that our bond with animals is the deepest proof of our humanity
Like all of us Palestinians in Gaza, our animals have been displaced, starved, bombed, and terrorized, yet we refuse to abandon each other
โWe have seen pigeons fall from the sky, shot down by drones. My nephews & nieces cried over them as if they had lost loved ones.โ In Gaza, survival means unionโeven across species. We're bombed together, starved together, displaced together. We do not abandon each other, says Hend Salama Abo Helow.

The Knight Institute is defending free speech at a school now synonymous with compromising on it
This is a perilous moment for democracy in the United States, but I couldnโt be prouder of the Knight Instituteโs work right now, and I donโt take for granted that we have the freedom and resources to do it. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

It would be really interesting to know if there's a relationship between the toga and the sari, since I think there was fabric traded to Rome from South Asia.

Text-based graphic that reads: "In The Museum of Future Mistakes, James R. Gapinski takes a blade to the seams of ordinary lives to reveal the uncanny nature of the storm that roils beneath the surface for us all. Dead brothers, haunted fingernails, injuries that produce vines, lonely dinosaurs, a magical laundromat, and so much more, spill forth from Gapinskiโs singular imagination and ask us to confront our grief, our vulnerability, our identity and our leaps into love." โTalia Lakshmi Kolluri, author of What We Fed To The Manticore. Dismissed by DEI: Trumpโs Purge Made Black Women With Stable Federal Jobs an โEasy Targetโ
The presidentโs attack on diversity efforts has derailed the government careers of highly educated civil servants โ even though the jobs some lost were not directly involved with any DEI programs.
โWe have observed approximately 90% of the workers targeted for terminations due to a perceived association with diversity, equity and inclusion efforts are women or nonbinary,โ said an attorney representing federal staffers.

Agents amass in DC, unclear why or which agency. Some masked.
Residents: โYouโre in a church parking lotโget out!โ
โWe donโt want you kidnapping our neighbors!โ
Agents start recording too.
Soon decide to leave, some mockingly wave their phones. They zoom down the 25mph road, skimming by our feet.
