I am just now catching up on the fact that the FDA was demanding Uniqure do sham brain surgeries (from what I can tell, comprising simulated burr holes and 10-12 hours of anesthesia) in their placebo arm for their Huntington's therapeutic, and I'm absolutely floored that this was a serious demand.
In an early part of UniQure’s trial, doctors performed fake surgeries on 10 patients at the request of the FDA. One developed dangerous blood clots from lying on an operating table for too long, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified discussing the private information.
This is not a trivial level of harm.

I'm in Santiago and I made it to South America's Guggenheim. (It was on the life list.) Really, it's a spiral mall, or caracol, an architectural type typical of Chile that came about in the '70s. In this one, you can get your cell phone fixed, get your nails done and buy dildos.
