re: deploying your own model, VS Code does have Bring Your Own Key functionality, so I'd be interested in hearing if your scenario is covered by the current functionality code.visualstudio.com/docs/copilot...
Good questions - the GitHub Copilot backend service will remain closed source, and models used by GitHub Copilot are licensed separately (and are mostly third party) so there will be no change there. It is specificially the VS Code extension source code that is being open sourced
There is some work that needs to be done to integrate completions into the Chat extension, but the plan is ultimately for both Chat and completions to be open-sourced in the coming months. Follow along with the issue for updates: github.com/microsoft/vs...

Hi, advocate on the VS Code team here, and thanks so much for this feedback! This is something the team is very much aware of and is currently brainstorming ideas of how to solve the intellisense/completions conflict, including the potential of adding a setting to help with this.
My reply was to provide a counterpoint to "AI brainrot overtaking the team", because, even though VS Code is announcing plans to become an open source AI editor, we still will make a concerted effort to have an even AI/non-AI split. Happy to hear specific thoughts on how we can do better!
