Good questions - the GitHub Copilot backend service will remain closed source, and models used by GitHub Copilot are licensed separately (and are mostly third party) so there will be no change there. It is specificially the VS Code extension source code that is being open sourced

Hi, advocate on the VS Code team here, and thanks so much for this feedback! This is something the team is very much aware of and is currently brainstorming ideas of how to solve the intellisense/completions conflict, including the potential of adding a setting to help with this.

My reply was to provide a counterpoint to "AI brainrot overtaking the team", because, even though VS Code is announcing plans to become an open source AI editor, we still will make a concerted effort to have an even AI/non-AI split. Happy to hear specific thoughts on how we can do better!

Hi there, I'm an advocate on the VS Code team! You can disable the built-in AI functionality in VS Code by selecting Hide Copilot in the Command Palette or selecting Hide Copilot from the Copilot menu in the VS Code title bar.

Today, we're announcing plans to make VS Code an open source AI editor.

We believe AI development should stay true to VS Code's core principles: open, collaborative, and community-driven. Let's build the future of software development together.
