re: deploying your own model, VS Code does have Bring Your Own Key functionality, so I'd be interested in hearing if your scenario is covered by the current functionality code.visualstudio.com/docs/copilot...
Good questions - the GitHub Copilot backend service will remain closed source, and models used by GitHub Copilot are licensed separately (and are mostly third party) so there will be no change there. It is specificially the VS Code extension source code that is being open sourced
There is some work that needs to be done to integrate completions into the Chat extension, but the plan is ultimately for both Chat and completions to be open-sourced in the coming months. Follow along with the issue for updates: github.com/microsoft/vs...
I hear you, 50% is still a lot more than what some folks would like to see. Thanks for the feedback!
If you have the time, creating an issue with more details of specific scenarios where you see the conflicts issue would be helpful! github.com/microsoft/vs...
Hi, advocate on the VS Code team here, and thanks so much for this feedback! This is something the team is very much aware of and is currently brainstorming ideas of how to solve the intellisense/completions conflict, including the potential of adding a setting to help with this.
My reply was to provide a counterpoint to "AI brainrot overtaking the team", because, even though VS Code is announcing plans to become an open source AI editor, we still will make a concerted effort to have an even AI/non-AI split. Happy to hear specific thoughts on how we can do better!
Hi there, advocate on the VS Code team here! Appreciate your feedback - the team does currently split work 50/50 between AI and non-AI features, though some of those non-AI features may not be quite as apparent to the user, like accessibility. You can learn more in our faq: aka.ms/vscode-copil...

Amazing to see how @vscode.dev's principle of openness still holds true, 10 years on! aka.ms/open-source-ai-editor
Hi there, I'm an advocate on the VS Code team! You can disable the built-in AI functionality in VS Code by selecting Hide Copilot in the Command Palette or selecting Hide Copilot from the Copilot menu in the VS Code title bar.

Today, we're announcing plans to make VS Code an open source AI editor.
We believe AI development should stay true to VS Code's core principles: open, collaborative, and community-driven. Let's build the future of software development together.

Hi, advocate on the VS Code team here! If you were using GitHub Copilot in VS Code, would love to know more about your experience so we can improve. Feel free to DM me!
And if you were using Copilot in another editor, happy to pass along feedback to the right team :)
