So, in launching a huge bombing campaign on Iran they apparently didn't plan for:
- Who takes over;
- Interceptor shortages from sustained drone retaliation;
- How to defend US bases in the region;
- Threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz; and
- How to evacuate Americans with airspace closed.
FAFO in these cases is a way to minimizing or rationalize the suffering. If βthey deserve itβ then βI donβt have to care.β In the end this is a variation of the dismissal of empathy that we all hate to see happening on the right. Too many people who are otherwise empathetic fall into this trap.
That is a smart way to handle this.

Not to mention any βempty sloganeeringβ was the result of Trumpβs withdrawal from the previous nuclear agreement, which was an alternative that was actually working.
To whom? It would maybe have been a good idea to stand up an alternative government / army ahead of time. Of course, Sen. Graham said yesterday thatβs not our job.

I have been watching everything this weekend through the lens of that episode.
The American people now see Trump for who he is β a would-be dictator who does not care what Americans think or want, cares nothing about our Constitution or our laws, and sees himself as a kind of eighteenth-century king, with unlimited power to drag us into wars without the consent of the people.
This is a crisis moment, and any Democratic leader who wonβt step up should be asking why theyβre in the role. The rest of us should be asking why we let them stay there.
What happened to, βFirst, do no harm?β Even if this director is forced to follow policy, he should insist on doing it safely. (Iβm not defending the policy, just to be perfectly clear.)
