I’m making slow progress, learning as I write. But this is also happening (see photo) and I’m also working on a new historical novel. #AmWriting #HNS2026 #HistoricalFiction

Huge congratulations
to Rachel McLaughlin. The UNWP is an excellent program and I can't wait to see where your journey takes you. Congratulations also to the runners up.

I'm writing about the women who wore these Roman shoes now Vindolanda Roman fort’s museum.
Thousands of shoes have been recovered from anoxic damp conditions below later Roman forts. Most date late 1st to early decades of 2nd C AD, with exceptions from later Roman ditches.

On #WorldBookDay pick up a real book from a bookshop.
Then sit down and read for a while.

Allow a storyteller bring you into the world they’ve created.
Meet the people the writer wants you to care about.

And forget your troubles for a while, big and small.

We need stories.

A beautiful twisted design, gold bracelet with decorative animal head finials, dates from the late 4th C - early 3rd C BCE, from Taranto, Apulia, and now in Taranto Archaeological Museum.

Love this gorgeous thing.

The dying of this glorious Spring day was spectacular.

This is about an hour after sunset. And the pinkish light is cast by dust from the Sahara desert which paints the skies in March.

I’m writing a bunch of scenes set in a Roman amphitheatre this week.

It’s brilliant to be able to draw on my own experiences in Rome last October and use my photos and notes made at the time to recall the special details that bring a scene to life.

Spring is in the air,
My new #Mslexia mag is here.

Worst rhyming couplet ever, but I’m greatly cheered to have this to enjoy.

Very excited that my novel is shortlisted in the Adventure Category of The First Chapters Competition organised by @histnovsoc.bsky.social.

Congratulations to all those on the shortlists. And good luck in the next stages.

Happy #March β€” or mensis Martius!
The #Kalends of March marked the original #Roman New Year. The sacred fire was renewed πŸ”₯ and the farming, sailing & military seasons began.
Named for #Mars, god of war & legendary father of Romulus & Remus, making him a divine ancestor of the Roman people.

If there’s chaos in the Middle East, and everyone is glued to the unfolding situation, and everyone is talking about it, then what is everybody ignoring?

Thanks so much to the judges who have selected my novel in progress for the Historical Adventure category in the #HNSFirstChaptersCompetition.

#Manumission is set in the years following the global pandemic that ancient historians call the Antonine pandemic.
