I condemn this abhorrent display of #xenophobia, and the underlying racist concept of "remigration."
Provincial oversight of licensing and training through exploitative private colleges is the issue. Not the cultural or national origin of the drivers.
#Newcomers are welcome in #Orillia

The City of Orillia was granted temporary strong mayor powers on April 3, 2025 to help the municipality respond to the ice storm that impacted the region in late March. These powers will become permanent on May 1, 2025....

We the undersigned members of Orillia City Council strongly oppose Mayor McIsaacβs request for βStrong Mayor Powers,β and his decision to use those powers to subvert and reverse the will of Council. We call on the Mayor and Minister Flack to rescind SMP immediately. #onpoli #Orillia

#Orillia drinking water is safe.
While emergency repairs to the separate damaged sewage treatment plant are underway, all are asked to reduce water use:
Postpone laundry and dishwashing
Take shorter showers
Flush toilets only when necessary
Avoiding draining large amounts of water at once

Good news Council update! On January 27th, Orillia Council unanimously supported a motion to make rental of the Council Chamber free for all local school boards and post-secondary schools. Early, meaningful civics education = lifelong engagement in democracy. #goodnews

Orillia City Council has sent a strong message to the Ford government that homelessness is a crisis, not a crime. We call on the province to work collaboratively to implement evidence-based solutions that uphold the rights, dignity, and safety of all members of our communities. #humanrights

Matt Elliott: Doug Ford wants you to focus on bike lanes and beer β and pay no attention to this, his biggest failure
Like the Wizard of Oz, Ontarioβs premier wants you to look away from whatβs actually not happening in this province.
"Housing has been Fordβs signature issue βΒ the subject of lots of legislation. Heβs styled himself as a builder-in-chief who will 'get it done.' Things arenβt getting done, though. Theyβre not even getting started. Housing starts in Ontario are down 18% so far this year."

Democracy only functions when people step up to serve.
I thank municipal politicians, reeves and mayors for their service to their communities.
They deserve better than to be attacked by Pierre Poilievre.
He is a political arsonist who fights from the gutter and is totally unfit for public office.

βHomelessness is a world they never imagined..β
"You know, you're just a paycheque away from being #homeless,"
"It's like a revolving door β you're just spinning and spinning, and you don't know how you're going to get out."
Worrying about housing & #food makes it hard to focus on anything else.

On #NationalHousingDay, I stand among 71 Councillors against the use of the Notwithstanding Clause to clear encampments. Municipalities need resources and evidence-based solutions to address the humanitarian crisis of encampments β not the suspension of people's Charter rights.
