Super excited to have this paper with Sabine Winters finally finished! We argue for a new account of scientific progress, where progress is just increasing abilities. A lot of fun examples with space science and AI!

When and how does AI help scientists gain understanding of the world? In a new paper, Mike Stuart develops an account of "pragmatic understanding" and argues that while AI can increase this kind of understanding in humans, it's unlikely to ever possess it itself.
