Oh wow, another Trichostema I didn't know about! Do you know how it smells? Every one I've encountered smells so interesting.
The number of culinary applications for this plant are beyond my ability to list, as its history of human use dates extremely far back. That said, the leaves are pleasantly aromatic and remind me of cloves, and compared to Sweet Basil, charmingly floral. It does grow more slowly, though.
In order to grow this indoors, I had to resort to supplementary light even in a large east-facing window. I used soil suitable for California natives, so quick-draining but not sand. I water it twice a week but I'm sure it could take more as long as it's not swamped 🧵
Like its far more popular cousin Sweet Basil, it's extremely frost tender (I lost one over a decade ago to a short cold snap), but the species is much more likely to survive its first flowering and tends to have a more complex flavor. I am growing it inside just on the off-chance of frost! 🧵
This is Ocimum tenuiflorum, more commonly known as Sacred Basil, Holy Basil or Tulsi here. I'm afraid I'm not confident on the cultural importance of this plant (but would invite contribution on that), but I've wanted a perennial cooking basil for YEARS and this is one of the best in my opinion🧵

The stem, as well as most of the rest of the plant, is mid-green and has long trichomes (plant hairs) down its length. The leaves are the same color with much shorter trichomes on top compared to the bottom; detail is lost due to focal length and digital zoom. The leaf margins are serrate to double serrate with few lateral trichomes visible. At the top, clusters of flower buds are growing with visible sepals and pronounced calyces if a slightly darker shade of green with very visible trichomes. Unopened flowers are visible inside some of the buds.
Remember when I used to post about plants? Well I didn't stop growing them! I have spent the last year trying to grow Holy Basil, and managed to succeed! More below 🧵
