tweet i didnt send because its way too long: I think if you're a musician and you're on the fence about just sitting down and learning music theory for real, you should know that for better or worse it's descriptive not prescriptive. Nothing will ever tell you "how to write a song that sounds like kinda sad but also kinda vengeful" or whatever; at best you will come away with the loose "dictionary" that is understanding intervals and chord qualities, but how you feel about every interval and chord quality and scale etc is still a personal thing and there isn't any kind of scientific creativity-terminating "these are the happy chords these are the sad chords" canon, anyone who is trying to sell you that is grifting you for the holy Google AdSense dollar. More importantly music theory lets you communicate with other musicians which is basically infinitely valuable because everyone else in the entire world is capable of having ideas you never could and you can just ask them how they did a thing that sounds cool and they can answer, and at least in my experience it feels kind of embarrassing when someone asks you some shit about your compositions and you go "I don't know. I just pressed random keys until I got the sound I wanted" which I will say again isn't an invalid way to make music. there is no invalid way to make music. But if you want to go pro or even just express the song ideas you get in your dreams or walking around doing boring shit at work before they dissolve like cotton candy in water you're probably going to want to streamline shit rather than having to rediscover 7sus4 chords from first principles
I used to be very anti-music theory earlier on because I thought it would make me write more cliche stuff but I've found the opposite to be true; it's honestly really hard and requires a lot of luck to walk the line of "avoiding tropes without knowing what they are and where they come from"
It seems to be a universal constant in creative work that your work with the least effort will be the most beloved
