I do think Spotify also lacks the old "prestige" or allure it once had for small artists, considering it's bit of a shitshow of a platform now with so much bloat, podcasts and AI music.

Surprisingly annoying to send new releases on digital platforms such as Spotify nowadays, with these random demands of further verification etc. (and ofc on YT I'm getting copyright claims on my own stuff). Could just be the distributors I've used. Anyhow, would be neat to have nicer options.

"Gallows - East of Vienna" from "The Myth of Mackinder" by Mavo, 2022.
This weird electronica album was trying to do what's natural for the genre: critique geopolitical theory and push for more heuristic postmodern IR theory-crafting. That's what music is about, after all.

And sure, lofi DIY projects may sound like horseshit, but they're usually made because someone had an attempt at expressing something. And I have no interest in an expression that doesn't have duct tape all over it. 7/end
Obviously one can get away with gen-AI use, though I wonder why make anything at all, if you don't enjoy making it yourself? Likewise, what exactly is there to enjoy in AI generated content if it bears no intention, no premise and no attempt? /6
Mavo (including its muddy Uralic poetry and photography) is generally done with minimal tools. It lacks high production value and fancy orchestral elements. Whatever is sampled, regardless how buried in the mix, is selected and embedded with intent reflecting the theme of each project. 5/
This also applies to other forms of art, e.g writing, visual arts etc. Particularly in writing I'd find any generative element disruptive to my train of thought. Digital tools may already be exhaustive enough even without AI, but they still generally require someone to fiddle around with them. 4/
Big part of these genres, at least for me, is the DIY aspect of it. The production/composition follows a certain logic of stream of consciousness, which is an important personal factor that has a major effect in how the end product will look like. 3/
Ambient/noise is probably pretty easy prey for gen-AI, including in partial use. Ironically, its greatest barrier may come from the fact that ideally it sounds like shit. I'd imagine for those larger, orchestral soundscapes people can certainly find use in AI. I find issue in this. 2/
Since it's becoming topical now, I thought I may as well briefly discuss my views on AI use in audio production, especially in ambient/sound art, and why I'll not share anything made with AI. It's maybe obvious for most, but I think downtempo stuff can be easily affected by this robotic curse. 1/

Hello everyone, and happy new year. Starting immediately with some defiant vibes, here's a small soundscape, "SΓyΓ‘h-ChΓ‘l", from "Osiris is a Black God" (2023). Sending support to the people of Persia.

This thing is soon three years old. Takamaa attempts to merge "harsh noise, bright spaces and tranquil, though distorted, melodies." There has been a few other releases since, but this first EP turned out surprisingly minimalistic despite the pronounced noisiness.
"Demon Tree Lamentation," a new track from the previously mentioned Mavo compilation.

Still codes left for the dark-ambient/noise album "Turve."
Quite liking the new 1914 album. Also, "1919 (The Home Where I Died)" is a wonderful song, especially in context. I found it a respectful way to ponder the parallels between the current situation and not-so-distant past in this part of the world.
