What about New Zealand though? In refugia where terrestrial mammals are still absent, oviparity is the dominant reproductive strategy.
This is an interesting research topic though, what egg-related behaviors were lost with the arrival of humans and other egg predators?
A polished section of Triassic fossil wood (right) and an acetate peel of its surface (left)
Some plant fossils, like this piece of Triassic wood, retain some organic matter of their cell walls πΏβοΈ With a little bit of chemistry we can remove minerals & transfer the organic matter on a piece of cellulose acetate that can be observed under the microscope π§ͺHappy #FossilFriday! #paleobotany
Given the topic, thatβs a pretty full school, in more ways than one! π

We're talking all about DEINONYCHUS on the 60th anniversary of its discovery!

Some species didnβt just survive the asteroidβ¦ they've barely changed! Wrote up a journal post about my new iNaturalist project: Cretaceous Critters of North America.

Flamboyant dinosaurs. Beautiful visuals. Compelling storytelling. Hard-core science.
Walking With Dinosaurs is back!
And I'm excited for you all to see what many of us have been working on behind the scenes for years...
Wait, where did they say that they deliberately made them white to look like the GoT wolves? Theyβre obviously not shying away from the reference by photographing the puppies on the Iron Throne and having GRRM hold themβ¦ but whereβs the direct confirmation?
Yes Iβm also confused by this? Thatβs the same amount of time that separates us from the chimpanzees/bonobos. Iβm struggling to find more information about which genes were changed and how much that shortens the genetic gap between the two generaβ¦
The exhibits at the new EFM are extraordinarily awesome!

"gentle giants"? I don't think so. Get smushed, theropod.
Acrocanthosaurus vs "Astrodon"
Gemini is using Pterosaur Heresies as one of it's sources now. Extremely concerning...
Is this from a known genera? Such a great prep job!
What you see below is a βwoollyβ mouseβviable mice with #WoollyMammoth genes, sporting a thick golden coat and extra fat reserves. This proof of concept is a major success for #deextinction, demonstrating how #Genomics and #CRISPR could help revive species weβve lost to extinction! #Biotech #Science
Well, at least USA Today has its priorities straight.
Caricature of Charles Darwin as a monkey on the cover of La Petite Lune, a Parisian satirical magazine published by AndrΓ© Gill from 1878 to 1879.
I find the contemporary βDarwin as a Monkeyβ art pieces so funny. Sure, they were satirical and thinly veiled mockery, but the fact that they look oddly plausible (like his head really could fit on there) kind of illustrates the point of βThe Descent of Manβ.
Their companion art book is fantastic!
People are very flippant with accusations of using AI sometimes. I wouldn't sweat it too bad, nice photo!

Did you know sea turtles at one point reclaimed the niche of predatory marine reptiles during the Age of Mammals? Trachyaspis, a Miocene pelagic sea turtle, evolved a pseudodont (βfalse-toothedβ) jaw and powerful forelimbs, likely chasing large, fast-moving cephalopods. #TurtlePower

This is a great hat to wear out in the field⦠wearing this and carrying some rockhounding gear gives a nice little heads up to a nosy lookie-loo.
You werenβt kidding!
I really love the slice with Gastornis on it! Really captures how transitional the early Cenozoic was from a bird/reptile dominated world to one that would eventually be ruled by mammals.
