My heart aches for this man. As someone who was pulled out of elementary school to be homeschooled, this is such a horrifying story. This is exactly why we need more checks and balances in place to protect homeschooled children.

Breaking children’s wills and forcing children to immediately obey are extraordinarily damaging doctrines. They are, to put it simply, examples of spiritual abuse: using religion to justify maltreatment of children.
Illinois has virtually no regulations on homeschooling, allowing parents to pull vulnerable children from public schools and then not provide any education for them. Officials call them "no schoolers."

Our church was very political even if it wasn’t explicitly in my curriculum. One man ran for president, the pastor ran for delegate, and they created a weird political “educational” organization called the Institute on the Constitution. Where I unfortunately attended “classes” once or twice.
I hadn’t heard of that and had to look it up but that sounds mildly terrifying. Was it like curriculum or did you have to attend classes?
My science curriculum was based in creationism and said that dinosaurs died in Noah’s flood. And my parents frequently said global warming was a hoax. On the rarer occasion I would be sat down and forced to watch a conspiracy video about a school shooting and how it was “staged.”
