This should be a cautionary tale to all elected officials, district attorneys, police chiefs, etc to not take DHS at their word, and to stop spreading false narratives that allow them to manufacture consent for their cruelty.

Every claim they make should be verified before being spread.

In the case of the two immigrants from Portland, the woman they shot was actually sexually assaulted. That was her “gang affiliation.”

And even *if* they had criminal backgrounds they should still get due process! There are no acceptable circumstances for this.

When Border Patrol shot two immigrants in Portland, they claimed they had ties to gangs. The Guardian later wrote a story exposing those claims as a smear campaign, but the narrative was regurgitated by city leadership that took DHS at their word.

Now we see the true agitators in Eugene were DHS.

District 3 councilors talk transportation at City Club forum District 3 is at the heart of Portland's bike network and is home to some of our busiest bikeways.

Good to see transportation get a solid amount of attention at an event like this — and to have so many councilors engaged on the topic.

Big day for automated vehicles. This morning the AV bill got a hearing at the legislature and right now the Portland Council Transpo & Infra committee is having an informational briefing about it.

Legal experts do not agree, and that’s why firewalls exist, but we have other folks representing us who won’t conflict with those cases.

Grateful to @councilorgreen.bsky.social and @counciloravalos.bsky.social for staying the course to look into this while we were being actively discouraged from passing this oversight resolution.

Public dollars are precious, and public trust is even more precious. We can’t afford to lose it.

While this could just be a matter of dollars being set aside to not be spent, Council was not made aware of its existence.

That’s a huge problem, and the Charter gives Council the authority to do investigations and oversight.

We owe it to the public to get to the bottom of this.

Days after passing our resolution for an oversight hearing on how this happened, more money was found.

While there could be a perfectly innocent explanation for this, Portlanders deserve transparency, especially when we repeatedly tell them we have to cut cherished programs and staff.

Wilson's statement is puzzling... for example, @councilormorillo.bsky.social has explicitly asked for police NOT to impede Federal agents, but to gather evidence and make note of what munitions are being used against protestors. That evidence and info can then be presented to the DA.

Portlanders deserve transparency about public dollars, I hope this is the beginning.

If City Council does not have an accurate an reliable accounting of funds to make decisions for what services we save and cut, we cannot do our jobs.

Council must exercise our oversight powers to prevent this from happening again, and I will strongly support Councilor Green’s oversight resolution.

Multiple police endorsed councilors yelled at him behind the scenes because it was such an egregious misstep. I did not misinterpret anything.

When they are ready to support the cause we are ready to welcome them in.

Remember when we were all desperately trying to deescalate and stop the national guard from coming in? The president of PPA went on Fox News to say he would actually welcome them. So no, we don’t all want the same things. And people have a right to know.

That also goes for our District Attorney Nathan Vasquez who ran on crushing protestors to appease business interests.

Those politics fed into this moment, and now the moment demands a massive pivot or they will go down in history as obstructionists to stopping fascism.

We are at a crossroads. The Police Union can choose to stand with Portlanders, to stand against fascism, or they can continue to obstruct policies that would reign the feds in because they see a kinship with corrupt law enforcement and not with the good people of our city.

There is a choice here.

Because I was choosing to highlight someone who has been specifically under highlighted in their ability to act here. Most people don’t even know we elect our district attorneys let alone what their powers are.

All levels of government need to be responding to our maximum ability. That includes Congress. That includes the governor. That includes the County.

I personally think we need to hear from the DA right now though because he has a some legal authority here.

The current Portland City Councilors who are endorsed by the police union are:

Smith (D1), Ryan (D2), Novick (D3), Zimmerman (D4), Clark (D4)

Listing them because the Portland Police Association is making it a fight to have a masking ban (for law enforcement) and a tear gas ban.

Councilor Morillo is calling on the county district attorney - someone who ran on a platform of criticizing protesters - to find legal recourse for the indiscriminate attack on people exercising their First Amendment rights.

Ask his office how he plans to hold these agencies accountable, specifically.

ICE must be abolished, and it will be. The American people won’t stand for this.

In the meantime, we need every elected official at every level of government to leverage the powers that we have to hold them accountable. I will be doing my part and I will expect other leaders will too.

It is completely unacceptable that ICE tear gassed thousands of Portlanders who were peacefully walking by the Macadam facility. There were children there, people were not dressed for a confrontational protest because it would be mind boggling to use this level of force against a crowd like this.

Mayor Wilson has now indicated he will expedite the rule making process for the Detention Facility Impact Fee. I am grateful for that.

We also need District Attorney Nathan Vasquez to outline how he plans to hold ICE agents accountable for the unlawful use of tear gas against a group of families.

The executive branch has to implement the laws we pass. We outlined other things he can do that we can’t, I recommend reading the letter in the post before this one.
