St Swithun Dreams of Rain
Though famously housed in a shrine in Winchester Cathedral,
St Swithun left instructions for his body to be buried outside
the church, “ubi et pedibus praetereuntium et stillicidiis ex alto
rorantibus esset obnoxius” trans: “where it might be subject to
the feet of passers-by and to the raindrops pouring from on high”

I desired a humble ending:
entrusted to the earth,
with the sky as a canopy,
and drops of rain
to wash away my pride.

My successors thought otherwise.
A Saint requires a marble tomb,
central shrine, gold in abundance,
they thought. No rain reaches me
here. No water from above.

When the floods tried to
drown the foundations,
I prayed they would let them,
that the waters would scatter
my bones amidst the collapse,

that the cathedral would
wash away in a swell of rain
and I, fragmented as I am,
would rest again as I wished,
beneath vast and sodden skies.

It's St Swithun's Day, have a poem where he's grumpy about the way he was buried, and was actually really happy when Winchester Cathedral started to sink because it was built without foundations.
