Healing in the Shadows: Cancer, Existential Distress and the Legal Paradox of Psilocybin Cancer patients often face long waiting times, limited access to appropriate care, and emotional needs that shift rapidly during treatment.

Cancer diagnoses can bring overwhelming distress, yet support for existential fear & anxiety is often limited.

A new study explores why some UK patients are turning to psilocybin to help them process, and how prohibition shapes their decision making.

New front runners in Psychedelic Research emerge, as Texas put 50 million into Ibogaine R&D On June 11th, 2025, TexasΒ passedΒ Senate Bill 2308, allocating $50 million in state funds towards the research and development of ibogaine for medical use. The bill had support from aΒ large bipartisan majorityΒ andΒ was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, authorisingΒ universities, hospitals, and drug developers to work towards potential FDS-approved ibogaine treatments for veterans.

Texas has committed $50 million to ibogaine research, positioning the state as a new major player in psychedelic science.

What does this signal about the future of psychedelic research funding in the U.S? We unpack the implications in the link below.

The Man with the Scale: David Nutt and the Weight of Things In a debate ruled by symbols and safety-first platitudes, one scientist insists on measurement. On distinctions. On human consequences. And is ignored for it.

Professor David Nutt founded Drug Science in part to help create the foundation for sensible and effective drug laws.

This long-form piece revisits his work on nicotine harm, MCDA, and what we lose when policy refuses to distinguish between levels of harm.

Drug Science Responds to the ACMD’s Review of Ketamine Use and Harms In January 2025, the then Minister for Policing, Fire and Crime Prevention commissioned the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) to provide an updated assessment of ketamine-related harms, consider its appropriate legal classification, and advise on how best to reduce harms associated with ketamine use.

The ACMD has published an updated review of ketamine use, harms, and its legal classification.

We explain why we broadly welcome their findings, and what must happen next if the government is serious about reducing ketamine-related harms.

Reverse Spin Bias A new study by O’Leary et al (2026) published in Research Integrity and Peer Review introduces a striking, unexplored phenomenon in academic research: β€œreverse spin bias.” Unlike conventional spin bias, where authors frame nonsignificant results as significant or meaningful, reverse spin bias occurs when evidence of benefit is ultimately discounted or discredited by the very authors who produced it.

A new study exposes "reverse spin bias" β€” a pattern where evidence of benefit is downplayed in academic conclusions, particularly for controversial treatments.

We explore how this practice can quietly derail evidence-based drug policy.

The minimum break you need to take between using different recreational drugs | Metro News From a harm reduction perspective, here's how long a break you should leave between using the most common recreational drugs such as MDMA.

With drug-related deaths at record levels, practical guidance grounded in neuroscience and public health is a key part of keeping people safer.

Dr Rayyan Zafar spoke to Metro about what the science tells us about reducing the long-term impact of repeated drug use.

The impact of drug control on wider research: Psychedelic mushroom exploration Restrictions on what are now deemed β€˜controlled drugs’ and, in New Zealand, β€˜prohibited plants’ unjustly impact both medical care and research.

We often talk about how drug laws restrict clinical research. But what about other areas of knowledge production?

A spotlight on research into mushroom-forming fungi in NZ shows how drug policy limits scientific advancement far beyond the clinic.πŸ‘‡

Cocaethylene – a personal account and commentary In 2023, the potentially catastrophic consequences of mixing alcohol and cocaine became very real to me, when I made this error myself. Amongst other historically well documented, near universally known dangers of alcohol and cocaine as individual substances, knowledge of the effect they have when combined is much less common.

#DYK When cocaine and alcohol are used together, your body creates a more toxic compound called cocaethylene.

Our latest blog shares a firsthand account of its health consequences, and why better education for healthcare professionals is urgently needed.

Psychedelic species under threat: Are psychoactive plants and toads facing a conservation crisis ? Psychedelic tourism and growing demand surrounding species of psychoactive plants and toads might be posing a threat to their survival.

As psychedelic interest grows, so do its ecological implications.

We spoke to Dr Anya Ermakova and Dr Sam Gandy about how rising demand and psychedelic tourism may be threatening the very plants and animals at the heart of psychedelic practices.

The medical sociological and social epidemiological psychedelics paradigm (MSSEPP) Although psychedelics have shown therapeutic potential in treating conditions such as depression, PTSD, and addiction, concerns remain regarding ethical practices, participant diversity, and the structural limitations of prevailing theoretical frameworks.

Psychedelics are moving fast. Our theories and ethics need to keep up.

A new framework challenges the biopsychic model dominating current research by expanding what β€œset and setting” means in both clinical and community contexts.
