Tarbosaurus, T. rex’s Asian cousin, based on the design from Prehistoric Planet. It’s red-orange in color with a creamy underbelly and spots, which are outlined in brown. It has a keratinized ridge on its nose and hornlets over each eye, and a thin coat of sparse, hairlike feathers on the neck and back.

I’m sure some of it was getting mileage out of the rigs they had, but ZT1’s Dinosaur Digs felt like a much better cross section of dinosaur diversity. I wish Dino Danger could’ve been the 2’s version of that, with Extinct Animals then being a non-dino expansion, but oh well. Still love them.
What always felt odd to me wasn’t even the designs (some were good, some were… uh…), it was the roster. I loved the huge variety of mammals, but some of the choices were weird. Stokesosaurus but no mammoths? Three raptors and no ornithopods? What are we doing?

5. Combine 1-4 to break bad habits and, hopefully, improve my confidence, thereby ensuring people will feel bad if they publicly shame me for not achieving said goal 😉
1. Get better at landscapes (especially plants) and environmental lighting.
2. Improve my ability to visualize objects in space and draw more dynamic poses and compositions.
3. As an extension of 2, get better at extrapolating from reference images instead of just following them to the letter.

However, I don’t think anything has ever captured my imagination the same way that Luis V. Rey’s Therizinosaurus did. It is, to this day, my absolute favorite piece of paleoart.

The dinosaurs have arrived at Blank Park Zoo, so here’s the project I’ve been working on this week. I was commissioned by the zoo to draw 23 silhouettes for signage comparing their animals with dinosaurs as part of their new “Dino Park Zoo” branding. Species labels in alt text.
