Many in this country hate the idea of helping people.

Not sure it's about hate as much as invisibility. The child welfare system shrouds its clients in a veil of "confidentiality" to protect their "privacy," though the only body truly protected is the system itself.

Yes, it was just mind- blowing, once I started to dig into this, how much social destruction has come out of the foster care system and how invisible that is to most of us.
