I'm from central/eastern europe, and it's (much) harder there to combine research and parenting, if you're a woman. Attitudes still need to change, in this year of our lord 2026, but we also need infrastructure. I'm grateful to benefit from this real, concrete support.

I'm also very lucky to work at @ueaenv.bsky.social! It's an inspiring place, and we've done interesting, and hopefully useful, work in the time I've been here. But I've also gotten good parental leave, an EXCELLENT nursery on campus, and funds for my baby + partner to come to this conference.

Really excited to be at #OSM26 with colleagues from around the world and also this small baby. I really appreciate @schmidtocean.bsky.social sponsoring childcare -- this sort of infrastructure makes the difference between letting people, especially women, do science and not.

It’s living, not “training a human”. Best case, all the energy used to build and run AI models is in addition to what people need to live and completely unnecessary. Worst case, they’re taking or competing for resources - energy, water, land - that people need to live.

what is the 2023 forecast bust? (I feel like I'm just discovering the existence of the atmosphere; yesterday I learned about the wealth of interesting ways different CMIP models record their atmospheric vertical coordinates)

Save NCAR from being dismantled today! The Trump Administration has vowed to dissolve the center that provides critical extreme weather and climate data for our nation.

Also, since I know a number of talented boys from good schools who went to go work for Andreessen Horowitz, Palantir, or the rest of those crypto-gambling-techbro ghouls that got this administration in: you helped do this. No amount of going to Mass/donations will save you.

If you do climate research, or if the weather is in any way relevant to your life, the Trump administration's plan to gut NCAR is bad news. (It's also fiscally irresponsible: good forecasts save lives and infrastructure). I am so tired of these stupid, spiteful decisions.

I really enjoy that your blog is a combination of "here's a good chili I made" "my cat is a gremlin" and "here's what's fundamentally wrong about how we think about temperature / communicate science"
