In 2010 Erika Ray was convicted of armed robbery and 1st degree murder. Erika did not plan or perpetrate a robbery or a murder, nor did the state need to claim that she did in order to charge her under a theory of accountability. Accountability laws overwhelmingly impact women and youth of color, often for proximity to events, not direct actions. People are found culpable by their relationship to the "doer" or the allegation that they should have foreseen and prevented events. In short, girls and women “should know better”.

In the U.S., between 3-9% of pregnant women experience intimate partner violence. That rate is higher for poor women and women of color. In addition to beatings and sexual violence, abusers limit access to social and financial resources,including prenatal care. bit.ly/FreeKeshia
