The case narrows political space and raises domestic costs for appearing “too accommodating,” but it does not fundamentally change policy.
While the case complicates Starmer’s effort to stabilise ties, it is unlikely to alter the UK’s broader strategic direction. London has already accepted that engagement with Beijing will be selective and compartmentalised, not a full reset.
Delighted to share my recent interview with the South China Morning Post on how Jimmy Lai’s conviction may affect China–UK relations and Keir Starmer’s planned visit to Beijing.

During my UK trip last week, I shared some reflections on the growing hawkish push in London to “disengage” from China. While concerns about China are understandable, sentiment without strategy can be dangerous. amp.scmp.com/opinion/worl...
This paper was in development for two years before DeepSeek's arrival. It's a challenge to keep pace with the breakneck speed of AI, but fortunately, the key argument has stood the test of time and is even supported by the latest tech. Thrilled to finally share it.
China’s regulatory response and the rapid rise of DeepSeek soon triggered a mirror image of anxiety in the US. The generative AI race has become a new front in great-power competition — and a case study in how technology reshapes security dynamics.
The rise of AI has added new layers to the traditional US–China security dilemma. ChatGPT’s success sparked anxiety in China — not only about losing technological ground, but also about threats to ideological and regime security.
Very glad to share my latest article “ChatGPT as a Security Threat: US–China Security Dilemma in the Generative AI Race,” just published in British Journal of Politics and International Relations. Read it journals.sagepub.com/eprint/A6ATG...
