Anyone else having flashbacks to the Iraq War when we were (correctly) convinced there was no legal basis for invasion & a million of us marched through the streets of London to protest?

Who’d a thunk quarter of a century later they’d have a President who makes Dubya look like Neville Chamberlain?

Paper Sisters by Rachel Canwell | #bookreview #historicalfiction | @northodoxpress.bsky.social Paper Sisters is the debut novel from author Rachel Canwell. It is inspired by the true story of a hospital which was kept in readiness for over sixty years and looked after by her family, but was never used. Such a fascinating story, I can see why it inspired the book. The author is keen to point out that although elements of her real family history are reflected in the narrative, her characters are not fictionalised versions of her ancestors.

Galileo’s handwritten notes found in ancient astronomy text Discovery sheds new light on how famed astronomer came to lead a scientific revolution

A historian has discovered that a 16th century printing of The Almagest—a highly influential ancient astronomy text—contains extensive annotations from Galileo Galilei, the astronomer who later overthrew that text’s conception of a geocentric cosmos.

Scandal, Protest, Goofiness, and Grandeur at the U.S. Bicentennial This year marks the two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the nation’s founding. The two hundredth wasn’t exactly smooth sailing.

How will the nation’s 250th anniversary be celebrated? Jill Lepore reflects on the 1976 Bicentennial, which found its footing only when Washington relinquished control and left the planning to the people.

The Spin | Going for gold? Why China’s female cricketers may benefit from Olympic aim The Cricket Research Network was told how the sport is perceived in China and why the women’s side is seen as the national team The Cambridge wind had a February chill, and the trees at Fenner’s were still without any spring decoration, but the old bleachers to the side and the pavilion, largely unchanged since the 1980s, were reminders of a new season just a turn of the calendar away. Fenner’s cricket ground sits next door to Hughes Hall, where the Cricket Research Network held their third annual conference last week. The organisation, headed by Raf Nicholson, sometimes of this parish, is a place for cricket academics to exchange ideas, and the conference a chance for rest of us to put an ear to the door of data and detail. Yes, relegation is now a very real possibility for Tottenham | Jonathan Wilson Spurs’ slide from title hopefuls to relegation candidates is a story of complete mismanagement and widespread injury * Sign up for Soccer with Jonathan Wilson here Last week, after Tottenham had lost 4-1 at home to Arsenal, Igor Tudor was bullish. It was possible leaving his post-match press conference to think he was a man with the energy and personality to drag Spurs away from the relegation zone. This week, after Tottenham had lost 2-1 at Fulham, Tudor was deflated. The previous week he had spoken of defeat in the North London derby as being part of the process, a game that would startle his players into understanding what was required of them. This week, he just mumbled about having to forget the game and move on. A week in the Tottenham job seemed to have broken him. Tudor is a specialist firefighter. He has saved teams from worse positions than being four points clear of the relegation zone with 10 games to go, which is where Spurs stand now. But that is what makes his defeatist tone so shocking. He spoke of “big problems”, dismissing a question about his 4-4-2 formation with the snort of a man asked about the shade of the carpet in his hallway as his roof burns down. He talked of an attack that lacks quality, of a midfield that cannot run and a defence that is not prepared to “suffer” to keep goals out. He made fairly explicit that he thinks his players lack the requisite character and pointed out how Fulham were better at reading the game, accusing his players of lacking “brain”.
