Yes, I can totally see how this is all done for the sake of the Iranians.

The best description I have for trying to work on postdoc proposals in Israel right now is that sometimes you have to carve a rock with a spoon to escape prison, so you hang a Rita Hayworth poster on the wall and carve a rock.

The horrendous AI-based warfare tactics that Israel developed in Gaza are now employed in Iran.

They killed 180 children and their teachers in a double-tap strike on a school. The girls were 7 to 12 years old.
And as I sit, in relative safety, and bid the time, I hold in my heart the people in Gaza, who had no shelter, and imagine their fear and helplessness.
It seems like ages have passed since Saturday morning and I am trying to work amidst the sirens. Being against this war doesn't make me feel less helpless, as. I run for shelter several times each day. It only adds layers of anger and frustration at my warmongering government.
The racialised biopolitics of the Israeli state is very apparent throughout this event, whether it is in the discussion of the spousal citizenship of migrants from the former USSR, the intimate citizenship of Philippine foreign workers and in the complex status of racially mixed families.
Happily attending an event celebrating the publication of a special issue on families in Israel, which features one of my own publications The Courage to Be Normal: Heteroactivism and Its Struggle to Save the Jewish Family. See here, in Hebrew. humanities.tau.ac.il/sites/humani...

I totally agree. I witness this both as a translator/editor and as a scholar.

I cannot provide interesting advice, but am having similar thoughts.
In 2026 as always, I wish for a better world, for peace, safety and freedom for all beings. I wish for kindness, sympathy and care all around. For myself I wish to become a better person, scholar and acrobat, to see, enjoy value love and beauty, even in troubled time and to find my first post-do
It was a year in which I traveled to new places, visiting Palermo, waving hello to Mount Athena from the bus window, hiking in Cheddar, recovering and healing outside the Middle East.
It was the year in which I learnt to find quite and guidance in meditation, as I walk through roads less taken.
It was the year in which I worked harder then ever, submitted my PhD and had it approved with no corrections, by an amazing committee and there was much joy and celebration.

It was a year in which I created a circus number above and beyond anything I did before.
As Lenny does, telling you the hard truths of the world, then saying it's still worth fighting for, in a soothing voice, whispering promises of comfort and hope. And as terrible as 2025 was, there was light and there was love and there were shards of hope, in resistance, in solidarity, in struggle.
And the blizzard hit and the dove was caught and there were so much loss and pain. But Lenny, also said that "Love is the only engine of survival" and "There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."
And the words of The Future, they too seem quite proper.
"Things are going to slide, slide in all directions
Won't be nothing
Nothing you can measure anymore
The blizzard, the blizzard of the world
Has crossed the threshold and it has overturned the order of the soul"
Leonard Cohen wrote in Anthem, in heartbreaking beauty that suits so accurately to 2025:
"Ah, the wars they will be fought again
The holy dove, she will be caught again
Bought and sold, and bought again
The dove is never free"
Authoritarianism and populism kept raising their ugly heads across the globe, along with waves of TERFism, heteroactivism and anti-gender politics. A climate crisis denier reigns the White House, while the world is getting hotter, and here we had the hottest November ever.
2025 was a terrible year, in many many ways. I stood helpless in front of genocide and ethnic cleansing perpetrated by my country. I spent 12 horrible days in a war zone, in a needless war that brought mayhem and death to Israel and Iran, mongered to serve Netanyahu's political ends.

Looks like a fascinating read and no less interesting event. Thank you!
