Smaller franchised brokerages may merge/consolidate, but this isn't a "Dollar General in a small town" situation. Realistically, your Better Homes & Gardens ABC realty might become Century 21 ABC Realty. Same broker & realtors, different franchise brand name, more things to offer consumers.

Honestly, as someone who works for an Anywhere company, this isn't going to be a huge issue. There are still plenty of broker franchises and healthy competition out there that aren't a part of Compass. Consumers/realtors will be unaffected. If Zillow bought Anywhere, that's the worse case scenario.

We still have a huge list of franchises that brokers can affiliate with if they choose to. No one is truly "forced" to, it's still a very competitive industry. It's run-of-the-mill American Capitalism. Any, thank you for letting me talk about my hyperfixation. No need to panic, this is a good move.

Ultimately I think it will be better in order to stay competitive. A lot of independent small brokerages stay that way because often they want it that way: less overhead, no franchise fee, no big boss, big fish in a small pond, advertise as boutique services, etc. we still have a lot of choice in RE

So those with smaller franchise brands and brokerages underneath Anywhere umbrella may use the opportunity to merge with larger brokerages or change affiliations (like changing from Better Homes & Gardens to Compass) but the average consumer shouldn't really be worried about it.

For those who don't know bc I have a young following: Brokerages franchise the names of the brands they use. I.e. Century 21 Joe Smith Realty is an independent broker that uses the power of the Century 21 network & name to provide extra services for their clients that smaller brokerages can't.

In my professional opinion as someone who works under the Anywhere umbrella, I'm glad it was Compass that bought Anywhere because if Zillow Group won the bid, that's when we'd see a lot of anti-competitive practices. This was the best case scenario.

Breaking News Consumer's Handbook 1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong. 2. Don't trust anonymous sources. 3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information. 4. There's almost never a second shooter. 5. Pay attention to the language the media uses. - "We are getting reports"... could mean anything. - "We are seeking confirmation"... means they don't haveit. - "[News outlet] has learned"... means it has a scoop or is going out on a limb. 6. Look for news outlets close to the incident. 7. Compare multiple sources. 8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers. 9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.
