“A true roadside attraction was a brainchild of an individual with a vision. These people were usually oddball folks who lived in rural areas.”
Jane Stern on roadside attractions.
The UFO Welcome Center was a roadside attraction in Bowman, South Carolina (not North Carolina as stated in the photo). Sadly it burned down last year. I wrote a short story based on it here: mrbullbull.com/newbull/fict...
My short story “Escape Hatch” is up on The Ana Issue #16 and is very inspired by Kate Folk (in particular “The Bone Ward”).

The longer I live, the more deeply I learn that love — whether we call it friendship or family or romance — is the work of mirroring and magnifying each other's light. Gentle work. Steadfast work. Lifesaving work in those moments when life and shame and sorrow occlude our own light from our view, but there is still a clear-eyed loving person to beam it back. In our best moments, we are that person for another. I/formerly Twitter dasor_fatti
James Baldwin. I’ve been thinking about this for a year.

ICYMI: the lovely Stone Circle Review published the only thing I’ve let myself write that isn’t the novel in a year. Been a slow publishing year as a result. Grateful to Lee Potts for believing in it.
It’s for the ones who make Xmas, the exhausted, the grieving. CW: death, addiction, alcoholism.
For Shirley Jackson's birthday, here are two lovely breakdowns of her openings to "Hill House" and "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" that I like to show my creative writing students.
First up is @bcdreyer.social's annotation of "Hill House": medium.com/@penguinrand...
I've never read Black Tickets/Jayne Anne Phillips. Adding to list. On the other hand, I think about Geek Love and Arty/the ending every so often.
Today I'm reading Rebecca Van Laer's short story "Self-care" from Oyez Review Issues 51. I love how she explores the tendency to heal through self-avoidance and expensive health habits, and perhaps most importantly, relationships with others. @rebeccavl.bsky.social

I wrote a memoir called Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls, a book that is very sad but also (I think) very funny whose most recent Goodreads review claims the content made someone physically sick 🤩 bookshop.org/p/books/long...
