I try to weave it in and know my character - will they avoid, respond with anger or laugh it off? My MC is starting to unpick it all; it’s a subplot or subtheme rather than a main driver.

Lol, a ton of traumatic things happen, and it often takes many chapters or even the whole series to process theworst of them. Some will never be fully processed.
