A meaningful moment of reflection this past weekend. Abel joined a reunion of past recipients of Georgetown University’s Legacy of a Dream Award. It was great reconnect with those continuing the work of being 'people for others,' a Jesuit tradition that feels more necessary than ever.
This #MLKDay, we reflect on Dr. King’s call to radical empathy and courage. Across the country, the fight for immigrant rights is at the heart of our collective progress. Voting, grassroots organizing, and collective action are our most vital tools for change.

#3 ✨On 9/19, we welcomed community members, friends, and longtime allies for a night of remembrance & reflection as we came together to honor the life & legacy of Joaquin Dominguez Parada, co-founder and advocate for the Central American immigrant movement in DC, who passed away this past June.
#4 ✨On August 15th, The Shrine of Sacred Heart hosted a powerful community event to celebrate a hard-won resolution, after weeks of grassroots organizing by the San Romero Committee, drawing 150+ attendees from across the District, including church leaders, community advocates & local residents.
#5 ✨ This year, we celebrated the opening of our first MD office in Bladensburg, Prince George’s County. After years of serving Maryland residents from DC, opening this office was an intentional step in our strategic plan to serve our community more directly. Here’s to expanding our impact.
#6 - As immigration enforcement and National Guard presence increased in the District this year, CARECEN was featured in various outlets shedding light on the impact on immigrant families in DC ensuring our community’s truth is never absent from the national conversation.
#7 ✨In May, CARECEN played a key role in a delegation with Congressman Glenn Ivey to El Salvador, coordinating meetings with local NGOs and civil society leaders and checking on Kilmar Abrego García.
#8 ✨This year alone, our Legal team delivered 140+ Know Your Rights presentations, including 40 in-person & 100+ virtual sessions, reaching over 6,658 families. We're shifting our focus to family emergency planning, helping families prepare for the unexpected w/ greater agency
#9✨ In October, we joined the DC NAACP on a panel discussion to discuss what immigration enforcement looks like in our city and the daily challenges our immigrant neighbors are facing. Its important that we continue to talk about this and not normalize cruelty. Thank you, NAACP, for standing with us
#10✨The DC Latino Community Forum Coalition announced the release of its policy brief, "Advancing Equity for the Latino Community in DC." This report offers actionable steps for city leaders to build a more equitable District.

With 1,300+ survey responses & 250 attendees we’re building community-led solutions for a more #equitable DC

It was beautiful to celebrate Salvadoran culture & heritage —a beautiful reminder of the strength and pride in our community. Thank you, Orgullo Salvi DMV! Over $5,000 raised for CARECEN!

#15✨Abel recently joined a roundtable hosted by the DCFPI on the challenges facing DC residents. The stakes are high for DC: "There are vested interests that want to polish what they're doing here, so they can farm it out to other cities."
