Sen. Cory Booker has broken the record for the longest floor speech in modern Senate history, surpassing the late Sen. Strom Thurmond’s speech lasting 24 hours and 18 minutes in 1957, in which he spoke against the Civil Rights Act.

Senator Booker broke Senator Thurmond’s record for the longest speech on the Senate floor. Thurmond used his time to stand in the way of progress. Booker is using his to stand for it. This is powerful. This is the America we’re fighting for. This is our moral moment & we must all answer the call.

Booker: Strom Thurmond’s record always kind of just really irked me. That the longest speech on our great Senate floor was from someone who was trying to stop people like me from being in the Senate. So to surpass that became more important to me.
