The Loft Literary Center belongs to a community rooted in language, creativity, and the belief that stories and the people who tell them deserve safety, dignity, and the freedom to live and speak without fear.

We stand behind basic human and constitutional rights and freedoms, including those protected by the 1st, 4th, and 5th amendments of the U.S. Constitution. These rights have been consistently ignored and defied by federal authorities in Minnesota.

bell hooks once asked, "Is it possible to sustain life? Can we embrace an ethos of sustainability that is not solely about the appropriate care of the world's resources, but is also about the creation of meaning—the making of lives that we feel are worth living?" In that spirit, our mission includes the building of just, life-sustaining communities. We are committed to doing everything in our power to uphold the conditions that allow art, dialogue, democratic participation, and human flourishing.

Many of the writers who shape our programs and our team are immigrants, refugees, people of color, and come from immigrant families. On January 23rd, the Loft is closing in solidarity with the economic blackout movement. We are calling on federal authorities to act lawfully, respect due process, and honor their constitutional oaths.

The Thing Is
BY ELLEN BASS

to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you’ve held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you down like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.

A poem by Langston Hughes titled "Tired". It reads as the following:

"I am so tired of waiting,
Aren't you,
For the world to become good
And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two --
And see what worms are eating
At the rind."

I've been thinking about this poem by Langston Hughes recently and although it was published in 1931, it remains relevant as ever.
