Eh? There's a fair number of differences but I'm not sure this is one. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine started on the 24th of Feb 2022; the US strikes on Iran started on the 28th of Feb. In both cases, we know just as we leave heating season that disruptions are likely by winter

Article misses the obvious. Of course, nat govs liked VdL's interventions in previous crises, she's usually excellent at reading the room. However, she has German biases and Germany's vastly different perspective on Mid East & Israel is so deeply rooted it's now invisible to them. Major blind spot.

Gas prices up by around 50% today.

A painful reminder that relying on imported fossil fuels is a risky strategy.

Screenshot of an archival document clearly written with an old typewriter. A truncated watermark says "of the European Commission". The title reads "A Summary of the objectives of an Energy Supply Policy for the Community in 1985". Below:

I. Energy Demand
To reduce estimated consumption in 1985 by 10% in relation to the amount initially estimated for 1985 by the more efficient use of energy.

In step with the development of nuclear energy, to increase the consumption of electricity, which should in 1985 represent 35% of energy consumption (25% in 1972).

II. Energy Supply
To limit to 40% (63% in 1973) in 1985 the degree of Community dependence for energy on outside sources.

To limit to 40% (60% in 1973) the share of oil in the overall energy supply.

To limit to 75% (98% in 1973) the degree of dependence on outside sources for oil supplies. This implies production of 180 mtoe in the Community.

To shift the emphasis of demand as a result, in particular by reducing consumption of heavy fuel oil in power stations.

🚨Breaking*: European response to crisis in Iran: targets for energy efficiency (-10%), for electrification (35% by middle of next decade, up from 25% today) and for import dependency (40%, down from ~60% today). Details on national implementation to follow!

Am I reading it right that "peak left" across most measures was in 2010? The shift back to the right seems already set in by 2020, at least on those graphs. I would have put the shift much later

You might be thinking of Icarus there. We can only hope that Musk does not make a Lazarus-like comeback in 2026.

What on earth are they referring to when they say that ETS2 is "not technologically neutral"? If you can sell a fuel which doesn't emit CO2, it won't get taxed by ETS2, whether it be hydrogen, e-fuels, biofuels, or Martian farts. It feels like a buzzword thrown in with no care for actual meaning

We're not yet at the point of "more gas infrastructure than there is demand" but we're apparently close to "more gas than ships to carry it". Which raises the frustrating possibility that consumers see none of the benefits of this crazy overbuild, shippers do. Still, starves the petrostates. 🥈

This FT article is pretty grim in that it mostly covers traders betting that Trump is going to cave to Russia, letting their gas flood the world markets again.

However, grain of hope. This graph looks to me like the beginning of that gas glut we've been expecting.

Am I doing my math wrong? Bond says that AI's energy saving/cost ratio is 600% per the IEA WEO. I checked: WEO believes data centres will consume ~1000TWh and will save 13.5EJ = 278 TWh. That's still really good but "only" a 27.8% return on energy 🔌💡

(Yes, I know the AI is also doing other stuff)

Frustrated and disappointed that, amid the 2040 target kerfuffle, there was no coverage of the ETS2 postponement. This tweak to an obscure tax law only cost €50bn or so.

We've signed an open letter calling to protect the Social Climate Fund from this sudden fiscal black hole 💫

And Sec for Interior and Chair of National Energy "Dominance" Council showing a few too many cards here: it's about keeping Europe dependent on American fossils with threats to our security.

In any other administration, we would be calling out how insulting this level of open interference and pressure from the US is. They just don't even see us as a player and we're unfortunately proving them right.

(Also, it would be easier to tell which MEPs are only referencing their own countries, clearly intervening for the sake of a clip for their home constituents. Over half of MEPs and all opponents have mentioned their country in the first few sentences)

I'm obviously being lazy but European plenary (and committee) livestreams would be much more watchable if speakers had an on-screen banner beneath them with their name, group, and country. "MEP blasts Migration Pact" is a snooze if they're from Patriots but a bombshell if they're EPP to S&D.

Electrification is the key to energy efficiency Productivity gains could cut final energy demand by nearly a quarter over the next 25 years, even as global GDP doubles

Excellent article which clearly and simply repeats the basic equation: the future is electric ⚡🔌💡

I'm no fan of this gas but gas-to-coal displacement is absolute madness 😱
Apparently not entirely Trump-driven but caused by higher gas prices but still devastating for climate (and the health of Americans) 🔌💡

Surprised @politico.com doesn't name the main culprit here. "A member state looking out for their domestic industry" in a manner that undermines EU solidarity? 🤔 Perhaps who tried to negotiate a deal around their car industry? I wonder who that could be!

ENTSOE has a dry sense a humour.

Headline: Germany splitting their bidding zone into 5 (!) saves €339 million/year, with payback in 4 to 8yrs.

Punchline: The Netherlands splitting in two saves €9mill/year; with ROI in 6 to ... 1240 years!

ENTSOE could not possibly comment which TSOs should pick.
