We find that the precession of the binary's orbit can introduce a dominant modulation in the amount of gas the black holes accrete and in the corresponding high-energy electromagnetic lightcurves.

Our group so far only consider black holes orbiting in perfect circular orbits, however this is very unlikely to be the case in reality. Our new study focuses on eccentric binaries and how the precession of the eccentric orbit changes the gas dynamics and the accompanying electromagnetic signatures.

Supermassive binary black holes are expected to be present in numerous galaxies as a result of galaxy mergers. The identification of them is a big open question for our community, and many degeneracies in electromagnetic signatures exist.

New preprint alert! 🚨https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.07897

We posted a new paper on the arXiv on gas simulations of accreting binary black holes. We find that if their orbits arent perfectly circular, the electromagnetic emission gives a way to measure this deviation! Research led by Stan DeLaurentiisπŸ”πŸ§ͺ

A black and white photo of Einstein’s desk, blackboard, and bookshelves after he passed away. Journals, magazine, and papers are strewn over the desk and shelves. A few of the shelves are organized, but mostly they contain haphazard, listing stacks that seem like they could fall over at any moment. The desk is a beautiful disaster, with papers and journals covering every inch. A pot for tobacco, a small glass jar, and Einstein’s pipe sit near the middle. The dark leather chair is pushed back slightly from the desk. The blackboard is sectioned off into several different regions, each of which contains one or more boxed formulas from whatever Einstein was working on when he fell ill.

Albert Einstein passed away #OTD in 1955, a result of complications from a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. Doctors recommended surgical intervention but Einstein declined. β€œI have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."

Here is his office as he left it. πŸ§ͺ

Thanks!! Due to two body problems i will commute from NYC into Princeton a few days a week so not gonna move! But excited about the Princeton community! Will let you know if I have questions:)

And....Event Horizon Telescope πŸ”πŸ§ͺ Campaign 2024 is off to a roaring start with a trigger on the first night! We'll be observing our two favourite supermassive black holes, together with a wide array of other space/ground facilities! Sometimes we see them go bang if we're lucky! πŸ“Έ #EHT

Always wanted to generate a black hole image just like the new awesome Event Horizon Telescope image of our galactic centers black hole? RAPTOR could be the code for you! We used RAPTOR to make more than a million realizations of SgrA

Check out the code here: github.com/jordydavelaa...

This puzzle is still to be solved! Is the jet pointed at us which makes it hard to see? Is the jet just very low power? Is the black hole not spinning rapidly to generate these outflows? Is the ambient prohibiting the jet to propagate? A big question still to be solved!

We find strong coherent magnetic fields on the event horizon. Which is somewhat puzzling, M87 is very similar however this allows M87 to launch a strongly relativistic jet, a stream of highly energetic particles and magnetic fields, but we dont see this at larger scale for our own black hole!

My main contribution was that I, together with colleagues, used my polarized radiation transfer code RAPTOR to generate over a million realization of SgrA* to understand its accretion disk structure near the horizon.

Four years ago around this time I was putting on disposable kitchen gloves to ride a citibike over a bridge to get to my girlfriend’s house because we didn’t know if it was a contact virus and riding by box trucks that I later learned were filled with dead bodies. So I’m gonna go with yes.

As an alumnus of this program, as I joined CCA as a pre-doc in 2019, I can only say good things about it. It is an incredible opportunity, and it paved the way to where I am now scientifically. Please apply and share! And feel free to reach out if you have questions. πŸ”
