You’re probably right but I don’t think this concern should stop us making the change.
The businesses should add in the local sales tax to the price and adjust things to be a round number as necessary. Any business you are paying with cash should know what the sales tax is.
There are of course exceptions like buying gas or meat where you have to round when paying with cash.
Just force merchants to include tax in the price up front and you end up with round number pricing and pennies are no longer necessary in most cases. Many other countries do this and it works great.
This is a good idea. The nickel isn’t worth producing either. Then require businesses to include tax in their prices and it becomes way easier to use cash.
There are also savings possible by switching to dollar coins instead of dollar bills.
