Littwin: While I was on spring break, Trump and Musk were busy breaking everything in sight
I was heartened by the huge and fearless Sanders/AOC rally at Civic Center park. But then came the Signal-gate scandal, and who isn’t afraid?
Just got back from Mexico City, with a grandson on spring break. We had a great time, and we were even allowed to return to the US, although our trip inevitably turned into an Ugly American apology tour. We didn’t even have to go to Plan B—applying for asylum in Mexico. My latest column in the Sun:

Littwin: Mayor Mike Johnston appeared before a House oversight committee that appears to have no interest in overseeing anything
If the committee questioning Mike Johnston was actually interested in oversight, it wouldn’t keep refusing to oversee Elon Musk
When Denver Mayor Mike Johnston went to testify before the House Oversight Committee, several GOP members threatened him with arrest. It was a farce. Of course the committee has no real interest in oversight or it wouldn’t refuse to oversee the unelected plutocrat’s nonstop assault on democracy.

Littwin: Trump and Vance try to humiliate Zelenskyy in Oval Office clash, but end up only humiliating themselves
Trump threatens to abandon Ukraine in its war with Russia if Zelenskyy doesn’t agree to make peace — Trump’s way.
In their tag-team Oval Office ambush of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump and Vance, in their bullying way, tried to humiliate the Ukrainian leader but actually only humiliated themselves. My latest column in the Colorado Sun:

Littwin: Made-for-TV ICE raids flopped, except for the fear they created. Which was the point.
And fear was the point. It’s hard not to give in to fear, but expecting us to give in holds the key to the Trump/Musk master plan.
The main lesson from failed ICE raids in Colorado is that, no matter how scary they seem, we can’t give into the fear. Because fear is the point — and fear is exactly what they expect from us. My latest column in the Sun:

Littwin: Forget the distractions. We can’t lose focus on Elon Musk’s all-out attack on American democracy.
An increasing number of Democrats have called out Elon Musk — sound the alarm: Elon’s coming — but that’s not nearly enough to stop him.
Focus, people. Trump is a walking, talking, blithering one-man diversion show. And while Trump is busy talking of turning Gaza into the Riviera, minus Palestinians, Elon Musk is busy destroying our democracy. Focus, please. My latest column in the Sun:

Littwin: For progressives who have taken a vacation from the news, Monday is your wake-up call
The stakes are so high that you might even need to bite the bullet and watch Donald Trump take the oath, presumably on a Trump-branded Bible.
For everyone who has taken an understandable break from the news since Nov. 5th, I have two words for you: Wake up. We can no longer afford the luxury of refusing to pay attention. My latest column in the Sun:

Littwin: We knew the new year might be bad, but who could imagine a worse start for 2025?
The truck bombing/suicide outside a Las Vegas Trump hotel involved a Fort Carson Special Forces member who apparently suffered brain damage.
We knew 2025 would be a bad year, but no one could have guessed it would get quite so bad quite so quickly. The surest thing, though, was Trump’s response to the New Orleans attack. My latest column:

Littwin: The best books I read in 2024, when books were my best refuge
The columnist's annual reading list notes that ’twas the season for great fiction, and not just from a certain politician.
It’s time for the annual best books I read in (fill in year), just in time for last minute holiday shopping. Turns out there was a lot of great fiction in 2024 — and not all of it courtesy of a certain wannabe dictator. My latest column in the Sun:

Littwin: Now that we know RFK Jr.’s top aide asked FDA to ban polio vaccine, isn’t it time for Polis to admit his mistake?
When asked, a Polis spokesperson said the governor supports the polio vaccine. But Polis said nothing about his Kennedy endorsement.
You’ve probably heard that RFK Jr’s top aide and fellow anti-vaxxer had recently petitioned the FDA to ban the polio vaccine. I called Jared Polis’ office to see whether the governor was finally reconsidering his support for Kennedy’s craziness. I know you can’t wait to see his non-response:

Littwin: There may be much to learn about the United Healthcare killer, but we should already know he’s no hero
Opposing denial of care by corrupt health insurance companies is absolutely called for. Killing the United Healthcare CEO is not.
It is moral and necessary to protest, and to work toward reforming, the corrupt health insurance industry. It is not moral or just to pick one of the industry’s many beneficiaries to kill—or to cheer on the killer. Life is confusing these days, but not that confusing. My latest column in the Sun:

If you’re wondering why no one from what Patel calls the “fake news mafia press corps” is on the list, so was I. It’s been suggested that someone whispered to Patel that all newspeople worth their souls would rejoice in seeing their names on his enemies list, just as reporters did in Nixon days.

The Sound of Fear on Air
It is an ominous sign that "Morning Joe" felt it had to apologize for something I said.
This is where we are today in the pre-Trump takeover. Morning Joe felt the need to apologize for a flippant remark that writer David Frum made on the show. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Littwin: The Hunter pardon was Biden’s last grave step in a year of selfish decisions
If Biden had dropped out earlier instead of desperately trying to keep his job, maybe we wouldn’t now be watching the Trump restoration
Biden’s decision to pardon Hunter after insisting for months he would never do so was a coda to the selfish decisions he has made in his last year of office, putting himself and his family over the country he has served for so long. My latest column in the Sun: coloradosun.com/2024/12/04/b...

Littwin: More people have turned off the news. That’s not disinformation, but it is dangerous.
My goal is that we all feel safe to read the news by, with luck and resistance, next Thanksgiving. Our democracy needs informed voters.
It’s no secret that people, particularly anti-Trump types, are tuning out the news. I understand. But ignoring the news — and the spread of MAGA misinformation and disinformation — won’t just go away, no matter how depressing it is. coloradosun.com/2024/12/01/n...

In our pod chat, former NYT public editor @sulliview.bsky.social is really interesting on the effect of NYT/WaPo ending public editor/ombud roles. This is insulating news orgs from good-faith criticism, which ends up empowering bad faith criticism.

Americans Have One Very Strange Cognitive Bias

If you’re still wondering how Trump could possibly have been elected again, Bulwark’s Jonathan V. Last offers up three possibilities — paranoia, obliviousness to reality and an extremely unhealthy dose of cognitive bias. open.substack.com/pub/thebulwa...
