Day 1 of #NYCNurseStrike! Thousands of nurses walked the picket line in the largest nurses strike in NYC history.
Thank you to everyone who joined us to demand fair contracts with the safe staffing, healthcare benefits, and real workplace protections for nurses and patients.

After accompanying a young immigrant New Yorker to his court hearing, Senator @juliasalazar.bsky.social recounts the harrowing story of his unlawful arrest by ICE agents, who were waiting outside his courtroom, despite his case being set to continue by the immigration judge.
Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die July 21, 2025 AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024. Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years. We refuse to watch them die. One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: βI no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I canβt work anymore.β Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year heβs lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness. Since Feb, Basharβs been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had βfallen, due to hunger.β Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, itβs no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%. AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)
A horrifying statement published today by the Editorial Committee of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

Translation from French to English by @cnorristrent.bsky.social:
I do need to start posting on here instead of reverting to the old Twitter/X habit
...the little boy thankfully oblivious to ICE's cruelty and their detention of his father inside.
Sadly, many children aren't spared the trauma of watching as ICE takes their parents away from them.
...so we asked them to allow me to escort the mother and son out first, ensuring that the little boy wouldn't have to watch ICE take his father away.
I walked the mother and boy out of the building as we used a live translation app to communicate to each other in English and Russian...
As we walked out of the courtroom together, masked ICE agents confronted us, blocking the doorway.
The agents told the father to come with them, insisting on taking him away without any justification.
It quickly became clear that we couldn't prevent the agents from detaining the father...
I witnessed one particularly disturbing encounter with ICE while I was escorting a family out of their court hearing this morning.
The family was a Russian-speaking couple with their young son, who appeared to be only about 4 years old.
The judge had just set their trial date for 2029.
Today I returned to Federal Plaza to observe court proceedings and support our neighbors attending their immigration hearings. As ever, numerous masked ICE agents filled the hall, hunting respondents, separating people from their families and communities regardless of their case status.
One of the many reasons that @cmshahanahanif.bsky.social is great for NYC! Especially as federal funding for the arts is being destroyed, making sure that musicians can thrive here is vital to keeping the city the cultural center that it is.
Thank you Rep. Nydia Velazquez, BK Boro President Antonio Reynoso, @juliasalazar.bsky.social, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, Councilmember Jen GutiΓ©rrez, @sandynurse.bsky.social and Councilmember Lincoln Restler.

Letβs reverse President Trumpβs Corporate Tax Cut; tell @Governor.ny.gov to fight back by passing the Corporate Tax bill in this yearβs state budget.

Earlier today, NYC Jews joined with our friends in @socialists.nyc @nychange.bsky.social, and with @juliasalazar.bsky.social @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social and more to demand #NY4All and #DignityNotDetention. Gov. Hochul & the state legislature must act to keep New Yorker safe from ICE & deportation!
In my individual capacity, I also urge voters to rank @zellnor.bsky.social on your ballot.
Supporting these four candidates and strategically using Ranked Choice Voting is essential for our city to defeat Cuomo, and elect a mayor who we can hold accountable to fight for working people.
Our North Brooklyn coalition works together to deliver for our communities. As we look toward the June primary election, we want to urge all New York voters to utilize RCV.
Today we announced our joint support for three mayoral candidates who we believe should be ranked at the top of your ballot.
Oh my god you want me to find "evidence" before putting someone in jail? Every time?? Do you have any idea how long that would take
Our prime sponsors @juliasalazar.bsky.social and @emilyassembly.bsky.social explain how important it is for this bill to pass. Without it, New Yorkerβs lives are in danger within this failing system!
TODAY at 1:30PM: Join @SW_Columbia and @nycDSA to demand that Columbia not collaborate with ICE and stop the university's attacks on students' free speech.
Rally at the Studebaker Building: 615 W 131st St.
Every person of conscience should demand the release of Mahmoud Khalil and condemn this clear violation of his constitutional rights.
And if a misguided allegiance to the state of Israel prevents you from speaking up unequivocally against Mahmoud's abduction and detention, that is shameful.
We encounter many issues in the state legislature that are truly complex and can't be simplified as two-sided. But defending our people from the federal government's attacks is not one of those issues.
This is about standing on the side of justice and fighting back against hate and oppression.
If you've ever wondered what you would do if fascism came to our country, if the government were rounding up our immigrant neighbors and trampling our constitutional rights, you no longer have to wonder. It's happening now.
Every one of us must ask ourselves: Which side are you on? Act accordingly.

An image of an opinion piece in City & State, New York. "Opinion: Universal child care in NY could save the Democratic Party Letβs show the nation that when Democrats are in power, they pass universal policies that directly improve the lives of working-class people. State Sen. Jabari Brisport speaks at a child care rally in Albany on Jan. 28, 2025. Office of State Sen. Jabari Brisport. By Jabari Brisport | March 8, 2025 05:00 AM ET"
Being anti-Trump isnβt enough to turn the tide. We have to make our case by passing universal programs, in states Dems control, that radically address working-class issues.

This is the second time in only three months that a gang of New York State correction officers have beaten an incarcerated individual, a young Black man, so viciously that he died. We will know more soon.
This time, the officers' victim was just one week shy of his 23rd birthday.

The frequent breaking news right now from our state's prisons, including a highly suspicious death last night at Midstate, makes these prison visits more important than ever to shine light on what's happening and do everything we can to change it.
Today I spent the day at Greene Correctional Facility, conducting an official visit in my capacity as Chair of the NYS Senate's Crime Victims, Crime & Correction Committee. I met with numerous corrections staff and incarcerated men as well as National Guard members.
We didn't kick them out. My staff handled it gracefully, despite hateful behavior from the self-identified CO's wives. And I'm allowed to tell the world about the way they behaved in a public space that belongs to all of us, including the other visitors they disrespected. Sorry this bothers you.
